WHITMAN ATHLETICS SPRING SEASON TRACK & FIELD STARTS MARCH 2026

What is Required to Participate?

Students and parents will need to complete several steps prior to participating in Cross Country at Whitman, including:

  1. Review the Fairfax County Public Schools Middle School Athletics site
  2. Complete the FCPS Middle School Athletic Participant Form (Submitted Digitally) – Due September 17th, 2024

  3. Return a completed   FCPS Middle School Sports Athletic Participation/Parental Consent/Physical Examination Form (PPE) . The exam must be completed by a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician’s assistant.  Please note that the form must be dated attesting that you have been examined, found to be physically fit for athletic competition no more than 14 calendar months prior to the date on which report was signed and that your parent’s consent to your participation for the 2025-2026 school year.  – DUE before a student can participate and stay after school.   4. Emergency Care Card – DUE with Sports physical

Track & Field Overview

  • Each athlete may compete in a maximum of two running events and one field event.

    • 400m
    • 800m
    • 200m
    • 1600m
    • 4x400m relays 
    • Long Jump
    • Shot put
  • Meets are held Saturday mornings starting April 25, 2026
  • All athletes must have 4 practices before competing in their first meet
  • Meet transportation provided

Practice & Meet Schedule

Practices (2:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m.) Tuesdays and Thursdays 

Meets:

  • Saturday, April 25 First race @ 8 a.m.
    • Mount Vernon HS
  • Saturday, May 2 First race @ 8 a.m.
    • West Springfield HS
  • Saturday, May 9 First race @ 8 a.m.
    • West Potomac HS
  • Saturday, May 16 First race @ 8 a.m.
    • Hayfield Secondary
  • Saturday, May 30 - Championship Meet Frist race @ 8 a.m.
    • Robinson Secondary

Athlete Attire

Athletic Attire must adhere to the FCPS Dress Code Policy

Practices - 

  • Appropriate T-shirts / Sweatshirts
  • Appropriate Shorts / Sweatpants
  • Athletic Footwear/Running Shoes

NOTE: No student athlete will be allowed to be shirtless or wear mid-drift tops or sport undergarments ONLY (i.e. sports bra or tank tops) during practice

Meets - 

  • Uniform top provided
  • Black, Grey, Maroon bottoms
  • Athletic Footwear/Running Shoes 

Student Athlete Self-Care

Becoming a student-athlete provides an excellent chance to develop essential skills and habits that can help young individuals become more prepared and responsible as they progress in life. We encourage students to do the following:

  • Hydrate
  • Stretch
  • Cardio workout on your own 1-2 days a week.
  • Time management
  • Access village support (parents, family members, counselors, trusted adult, coaches, etc)
  • Appropriate nutrition
  • Sleep

Competition

  • There are 4 scheduled competitions
  • Athletes will be competing in 6 races and 2 field events.
  • Whitman Athletics Leadership will provide meet transportation details.
  • Athletics Staff will be responsible for communicating all competition details to the team.
  • Certified Athletic Trainers will be onsite for meets
  • Meet Format
    • 1600m race begins at 8 a.m.
    • Field Events begin at 8 a.m.
    • Races will continue one at a time until all 6 are completed.
  • Parents/Guardians of Whitman Student Athletes who wish to have their student released directly from the event into parent/guardian care must email coaches at least 24 hours before the meet event. Please note:
    • Students may only be released to their respective “on file” guardian / parents.
    • No “buddy/neighbor” releases permitted.
    • Please be prepared to show a government issued ID when signing out.

Coaches Student Expectations

  • Always have water at practices
  • Show up to train, not overtrain
  • Wear appropriate clothes and running shoes
  • Form bonds with teammates and help others succeed
  • Attend practices weekly
    • Four practices are required before student can participate in their first meet 

FAQ

How will my student let the coaches know they will be at practice? 

Students must sign for the after-school program at lunch each day of practice to confirm attendance.

Where do students go for practice?

When the dismissal bell rings, on practice days, students should report to the 7th grade Health Room by 2:30 p.m. to meet Coach.

Where will my student go to get the late bus?

Students who are riding the late buses home will report to cafeteria at 4:30 p.m.

What door should I pick up my student from practice?

Students who have parent transportation will exit the building out of Door #1 at 4:30 p.m.

Can I take my student athlete home after the event?

  • Parents/Guardians of Whitman Wildcat Student Athletes who wish to have their student released directly from the event into parent/guardian care must email coaches at least 24 hours before the Meet event. 
    Please note:
