First Class Awards Recognize Inclusion and Positive Impact

Angela PerezIn March, the Advisory Committee for Students with Disabilities (ACSD) recognized 13 individuals and teams for excellence in all facets of education related to disability. The organization’s First Class Award celebrates and recognizes individuals who support, implement, or design programs and activities that include students with disabilities and result in improving outcomes for all students.

This year’s winners included Angela Perez, Special Education Department chair at Whitman Middle School.Angela, advocates to ensure that every student who receives special education services at Whitman is known and understood. She fosters positive relationships with families with a compassionate and positive mindset. Angela leads with persistence and care, as seen in her work helping a previously homebound student transition to full school attendance through patient, individualized support. 

Winners of the First Class Award model excellence in their role relative to special education, have a positive impact that benefits disabled and non-disabled students alike, and are committed to creating an inclusive environment and mindset. The winners are putting into action FCPS Strategic Plan  Goal 2: Safe, Supported, Included, and Empowered , which fosters a student safety and well-being and an inclusive school climate and culture.
