1. Message from Mr. Greata

Good Afternoon Woodson,

Congratulations Class of 2024! Yesterday’s ceremony was so wonderful, and we are so proud of our graduates and their accomplishments. There are so many people that helped make it a special day. Thank you to everyone on the Woodson staff, without whom, we could not hold a graduation.  A special shout out to Josh Peters, Paula DiSalvo, Casey Delaney, Darlene Sheppard, and Alexa Pugnettifor all their hard work in planning and executing the ceremony - what an amazing job! Of course, it wouldn’t be a graduation without speakers. Thank you Mia Fanshaw, Aida Berhe, Annika Markovich, and Amy Moir, for making the ceremony extra special.

The senior class did not get there on their own. Our senior class sponsors Denise Holsingerand Brittany Williamswere there every step of the way.  Thank you both – you are amazing!

Our preparations are well underway for the official name change to Carter G. Woodson High School. Our student ambassadors have been hard at work and we have some exciting news to share. I am pleased to announce that we are holding an art competition and calling on artists of all forms to draw inspiration from our new namesake. We want those artists to engage in learning about Carter G. Woodson’s life and make meaningful connections to our school to inspire their own artistic creations reflective of those connections. Check out the information below within the Weekly. Final submissions will be on September 6, 2024. Don’t forget to check out our new student ambassadors Instagram account at cgw.studentambs!

Next week, the Woodson Weekly will be sent out on Wednesday, the last day of school. Included in that message will be important dates for the summer and the beginning of the school year.

Congratulations again to the class of 2024 and I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Kevin GreataPrincipal

Seniors, please remember to arrive by 1:00 pm on Thursday, ensuring we are ready for our 2:00 pm ceremony start time. It was wonderful to celebrate our seniors at the annual Senior Awards Ceremonythis past Thursday. We recognized the hard work of 55 students who have achieved remarkable accomplishments and made significant contributions to our community. A special thank you to Christine Lieb-Mosleyand Josh Petersfor their dedication in coordinating this special event.

Our underclass will also have an exciting week next week with final exams and shorter school days starting on June 6th. Please refer to the detailed schedule information below.

Our students continue to excel and give back. This month, Rida Karimreceived the prestigious Region Affiliate Gold Award from NCWIT Aspirations in Computing, and Tiffany Parkcaptivated a room full of business and educational leaders at the "Leading for Tomorrow’s Innovation" event. Additionally, our community demonstrated remarkable generosity at Relay For Life, raising over $55,000 for cancer research. A special mention goes to Team Believe for their outstanding contribution of $38,000 towards this noble cause.

Exciting news from our athletic teams! Our Soccer, Tennis, and Girls Lacrosseteams are progressing to the VHSL State Championships. Follow our Instagram accounts for live scores and updates on their journey. Let's also congratulate the Class of 2024 senior athletes, recently honored at our Athletic College Commitment Ceremony. We celebrated 33 seniors who have committed to playing their respective sports at the collegiate level, showcasing their dedication and talent.

Tonight, we have the girls and boys soccer regional finals at Thomas Jefferson High School, starting at 5:00 pm. Come out and support our teams!

8. Counselor Corner

Before we wrap up another amazing year, we are busy working to ensure that seniors have a seamless post-secondary transition and that we support our rising seniors to make the most of the time they have before senior year begins! Students in the Class of 2025 received a Senior Prep Lesson  this week to highlight what they should be doing this summer to prepare for senior year. Be sure to discuss post-secondary plans with your rising senior and how to support them in their endeavors to use the most of their time this summer. They should be familiarizing themselves with the Senior Padlet , finalizing their list of 5-7 colleges (and deciding deadlines), working on essays, visiting colleges, and preparing to complete the Common App when it opens Aug. 1. The College padlet  has many great resources, like testing info, essay-writing support, and college research. This and many specialty padlets are located on the College & Career Center padlet

As we celebrate the Class of 2024 and wish them well on their future endeavors, we hosted Senior Awards. Seniors earned more than 3 million dollars in scholarship money and were recognized by faculty and community members as outstanding scholars, leaders, and contributing citizens. We guided students through their Senior Survey, in which they identified their post-secondary plan and if attending college, identified which college will receive their final transcript. After graduation, counselors will work hard to submit final transcripts. Any senior who has not completed their Senior Survey will need to complete this before Senior Clearance after graduation practice on Monday June 3.

Underclassmen intent on taking a summer class should not delay to register . Self-directed Econ & Finance closed on May 24. HPE 10 is full and on a wait list. Any family with questions about summer school may contact their counselor. Students in need of credit recovery due to failing a core course may register for free. Please let your school counselor know once you register for a summer class. Bear in mind that school counselors do not work in summer, so if you receive an auto reply this summer, we will respond in August. It’s a pleasure to serve our community. 1. Message from Mr. Greata

Good Afternoon Woodson,

This past Saturday, we took a significant step in our renaming journey and deepened our understanding of its significance to Woodson High School. We traveled to Buckingham County to participate in the Annual Carter G. Woodson Celebration, where we engaged with living history and formed a new partnership with an extraordinary community of educators, historians, and historical figures.

Among these extraordinary individuals was Jessie Woodson-Johnson, the daughter of one of Carter G. Woodson’s nephews. Standing on the site of Dr. Woodson’s birthplace and hearing about her experiences as one of the first students to integrate Buckingham County Schools was both a privilege and an inspiration. It served as a powerful reminder of the importance of continually studying our complete history, understanding its nuances, and recognizing hidden heroes.

I want to extend my gratitude to Hiroko Roseand her father Luke Rose, who accompanied me, along with two of my sons, to Buckingham County for the celebration of Dr. Carter G. Woodson. They were wonderful companions for the day, and we will be sharing our experiences next week in a recorded discussion following the weekly wrap-up podcast!

We invite families to join us on Thursday, May 30th, from 6:00 - 7:30 pm in Woodson Cafeteria B, for our Woodson Pyramid Community Night: "The Power of Our Words: Combating Hate Speech and Racial Slurs." For more information and to RSVP, please see further details in this edition of the Woodson Weekly.

With only 9 days remaining for seniors, our activities are in full swing. Here are the events for this weekend:

  • Cavs Got Talent:Tonight at 6:30 pm in the Auditorium. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $7.
  • Woodson 5K:This Saturday, May 18th, starting at 8:30 am. Lace up your walking and running shoes!
  • Relay For Life:Starts at 2:00 pm in the main gym.

Next week, we will welcome rising freshmen from Frost and the inaugural freshman class of Carter G. Woodson High School for our activities fair. We look forward to greeting these future Cavaliers!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Congratulations to Ryan Battagliaand Marek Raynal Kosecky, our doubles district champions, with Ryan clinching the district singles title as well. Furthermore, Aiden Brennan, Dariya Lukashuk, James Ngo, Amy Cung, Nicolas Tong, Lily Eng, Jared Jessup, Austin Song, and Mia Monroehave been accepted into the Virginia Governor’s School, a prestigious program that enhances student learning across academics and the arts.

This Saturday marks an important occasion as our student ambassadors and staff head to Buckingham County for the annual Dr. Carter G. Woodson Celebration. This event, which features local historians, scholars from UVA, and relatives of Dr. Woodson, is a profound tribute to his legacy and offers a deep dive into our history. We look forward to sharing all that we learn!

We're also excited for the class of 2024 to enjoy their prom at the Westwood Country Clubthis Saturday. Thanks to the exceptional efforts and creativity of Dr. Disalvo, Denise Holsinger, Bittani Williams, Cyndi Navarrete, and Stephanie Pollack, along with the senior class council-  it's sure to be an unforgettable night.

Senior families, please check your email for detailed graduation information and remember that our Class of 2024 webpage has everything you need regarding graduation.

This week, we thoroughly enjoyed celebrating and thanking our school’s MVPs - our teachers!  Teaching is more than a profession, it is a calling, and it has been said that a good education can change anyone, a great teacher can change everything. Thank you, Woodson teachers, for your incredible dedication and impact.

As we approach the weekend, let us also express our gratitude to our first and forever teachers—our mothers. Happy Mother's Day,and thank you for everything you do!

Get2Green is FCPS’ sustainability program, and supports green teams at schools with hands-on environmental projects to improve the sustainability of the school and community.

1. Message from Mr. Greata

Good Afternoon Woodson,

Spring is bustling with activity, showcased at our recent softball and baseball senior nights. A hearty congratulations to all our seniors, and heartfelt thanks to the parents whose support made those evenings truly memorable. With our Spring senior athletes duly honored, our focus now shifts to districts, kicked off with boys and girls tennis matches yesterday. Keep an eye on woodsonsports.com for updates on upcoming district competitions.

Did you know that our school boasts one of the most robust Get2Greeninitiatives in the county? Our environmental club tends to an extensive garden yielding potatoes, greens, and carrots, among other delights. Just last year, their efforts culminated in a generous donation of 700 lbs of produce to Food for Others. Recently, Joseph Tsoand Andrew Kimshowcased our school's environmental stewardship to FCPS administrators, igniting inspiration for similar endeavors. Meanwhile, Syd Huffmanand Victoria Shittushared their transformative journey at the Get2Green Symposium, highlighting the profound impact of environmental education on their holistic development. Additionally, Emma Figand her troop added a touch of Springtime splendor to our outside dining space and built some beautiful butterfly gardens.

Attention all former Little Run Roadrunners, families, and friends! Join us as we celebrate Little Run's 60th Anniversary on Saturday, May 18th from 11 am to 2 pm. It promises to be a day brimming with joy, delicious food, melodious tunes, engaging games, and cherished memories. RSVP and volunteer for the event through the provided link to ensure your spot in this special occasion.

A resounding applause to Nathaniel Kurland, who stands among the illustrious few - one of only 7 FCPS students awarded corporate-sponsored scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Such recognition is reserved for the brightest minds, with a mere 770 National Merit finalists chosen to receive this prestigious honor. Bravo!

As we gear up for the weekend, let's not forget that next week marks both Teacher Appreciation Weekand National School Nurse Dayon May 8th. Let's come together to express our gratitude and appreciation for the exceptional dedication and care our teachers and staff shower upon our students each day.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend ahead,

Kevin Greata

With just a few weeks left in the school year, we encourage students to finish well. You have plenty of time to positively  impact your grades or maintain your academic momentum. Use appointment passes during Returns, use the Academic Support padlet  for content help and SOL released tests . We have tips on how to guard against procrastination and how to manage test anxiety .

For stress management, our Social/Emotional Supports padlet  has many resources. We recommend using breathing techniques ahead of a big test or assignment, or in the moment of overwhelm. Find a breathing bubble on our Woodson Wellness site  to guide you or learn the 4-7-8 Breathing technique  to use at any time.

Seniors! With May 31, your last day(!) coming, please remember that regular attendance and commitment will help guard against “senioritis”. Maintain your status with your intended university by following through with strong grades and completing a successful high school transcript. If you are unsure of your plans or need support in your final decision, please see your counselor. We will host a final application workshop  on May 28 at 10:15 in the Career Center for students who intend to start their college journey at NOVA.

Thank you to our students, parents, and faculty who partnered with us for our Spring Advisory Council meeting. It was a huge success and gave us an opportunity to connect, highlight our services, and receive feedback for future programming. We also celebrated our military-connected students with a breakfast. We love connecting with our community!

1. Message from Mr. Greata

Good Afternoon Woodson,

It has been an amazing week at Woodson and I am excited to share with you the recent accomplishments and upcoming opportunities within our vibrant school community.

This past week, our students displayed exceptional talent and creativity at the Pyramid Art Showand the Senior/AP Art Show. I was truly impressed by the variety and depth of the artwork presented. Each exhibition was unique and demonstrated the individual expressiveness and perspectives of our amazing student artists. Additionally, our band, orchestra, chorus, and guitar students broadened their horizons on their trip to New York City, where they received world-class instruction and visited significant cultural sites, including the 911 Memorial and Times Square.

Our College Partnership Programstudents recently visited St. Mary’s College of Maryland, gaining valuable insights into college life and opportunities. College Partnership Program is a countywide enrichment program that supports students as they explore, apply to, and enroll in college. This trip is just one of the many ways we support our students in their journey to higher education. Thank you Eileen Oviatt, Bryce Benson, Katherine Stransky, and Megan Howardfor planning and supporting this trip.

We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to all who contribute to the success of our school. Next Wednesday we will be celebrating our administrative staff in the front office, student services, and CSS program, on Administrative Professionals Day. They deserve a special mention for their unwavering support of our school community. They set the welcoming tone at our school and are always ready to assist anyone, anytime.

We were also honored to thank our military families at this month’s breakfast, highlighting the strength their community brings to our community. Events like these serve as a testament to the resilience and commitment that run deep within our school community. Thank you to our Military Family and Life Counselor Alaina Anderson, DSS Josh Peters, Admin Assistant Debbie Glover, Counselors Adrienne Woodand Lizzie Walterfor organizing this event. And thank you to everyone that put on purple this past Wednesday to show support for these cherished families.

There are lots of ways to get involved at Woodson next week, including our INOVA blood drive, PTSO Survey Fundraiser , AP proctoring, and joining the PTSO Board of Directors. Please see below for more information about each of these opportunities.

Have a great weekend,

Kevin Greata
Principal

9. Woodson Sports Physical Night - June 10th

Every year, the Woodson Athletic Training Program hosts a  Sports Physical Night . The goal of Sports Physical Night is to provide a complete pre-participation examination screening that will leave student athletes with a valid VHSL physical for the entirety of the following school year. Each year, it is required that all student athletes have a completed VHSL physical on file before participating in sports. The price will be $50 as it has been in previous years. Hosting this event is our Athletic Training Program’s ONLY fundraiser for the year as we DO NOTreceive any funding from the county.  ALLproceeds go towards helping the program purchase supplies . Without your support we would not be able to provide the services we do for our student-athletes. If you are interested, please sign up for an appointment slot here .

As always, if you cannot make it to our night on June 10th, but still want to support FCPS, feel free to sign up for another school's event! Every school will host (or co-host) their own night.  (We promise we won't be mad).

Want to Volunteer??

We are always looking for physicians and HCP's to complete the actual physical exams (MD, DO, NP, PA) as well other HCP’s comfortable with taking vital signs. If you are willing and able to donate your time, it is greatly appreciated . You can sign up here.

If you can’t make it, but you know of some others that would be able to assist us, please feel free to spread the word and sign up sheet! If you have any questions or would like more information, please feel free to reach out to Chris Hogge, ATC at [email protected] .

1. Message from Mr. Greata

Good Afternoon Woodson,

As April unfurls its blossoms of spring, we also commemorate Autism Acceptance Month. Notably, according to the CDC, one in 44 children in the United States is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. This emphasizes the importance of fostering inclusivity in our school environment. Here at Woodson, we recognize the significance of embracing neurodiversity, acknowledging that each student, including those diagnosed with autism, brings a valuable array of talents and strengths to our community. They enrich our collective experience and remind us of the beauty and richness found in our differences.

Spring is an exciting time of year as students participate in many culminating activities, demonstrating what they have learned and celebrating their accomplishments. One of these exciting events is our Woodson Pyramid Art Show, where we get to experience the stunning array of artwork from our talented K-11 students, showcasing their creativity and hard work. I hope you can join us on April 16from 6-8 pm in Cav Hall.

Spring also beckons us to lean on our families for volunteers and to seek new parent leadership for the upcoming year. Please consider the following opportunities to get involved with Woodson, with options to suit all levels of availability and interest:

  • Mild:The PTSO is participating in an Oklahoma University survey fundraiser. The more people that fill out the survey, the more funds are raised for the PTSO, which will go directly back into our school. The survey collects information about the perceptions of families of high school-aged students regarding shop class, vocational/technical training, and careers in construction. Please take a little bit of time to fill out [this survey] and support our school.
  • Medium:We urgently need parent volunteers to help proctor AP exams, running from May 6-17, with shifts in the morning and afternoon. If you can help, please contact Jamie Korpacz and Victoria Powell. Their emails are in the weekly!
  • Spicy:Our Parent-Teacher-Student Organization (PTSO) is currently seeking three enthusiastic volunteers to serve as officers on their Board of Directors for the next school year. The PTSO plays a crucial role in supporting both students and staff. Joining this dynamic team is a wonderful way to make a significant impact on our school community. Please consider stepping up and reach out to Co-President Sara Mastro at [email protected] .

Whether you like your involvement mild, medium, or spicy, your engagement is crucial to our school’s success. Each volunteer, every survey filled, and each new officer adds to the strength and vibrancy of Woodson. Together, let’s continue to build a welcoming and inclusive community where every student thrives.

Thank you in advance for your support and involvement.

Kevin Greata
Principal

2. Month of the Military Child

On average, children in military families move six to nine times during their K-12 school career. That’s about three times more frequently than their civilian peers. Between now and April 17th, make sure to stop by Student Services and place a sticker on the map of all the places you have lived and all the places you know your family member has been deployed or stationed at!

Join our community and turn FCPS purple on PurpleUp! Day, Wednesday, April 17th. Wear purple in recognition of FCPS’ 14,000 enrolled military-connected students.
