    How to Filter by Content Type

    • Once you have search results, you can filter to a specific type of resource by clicking on it on the menu:

    How to Improve Search Results

    • The Statista search understands the use of "quotes" to keep words together as a phrase.
    • An asterisk * can be used as a wildcard at the end or beginning of words to search multiple forms:
      • For example  *ballsearches football, basketball, and so on.
    • There are two quick filters at the top after a search, Sort Byand Location Focus.
      • Sort by orders the results by relevance, date, or popularity.
      • Location focus moves items from your country higher in the search results.

    • Location focus will generally default to the location of your IP address, you can change it if you need to focus on different locations.
    • Additional filters are in the side menu after you search, below the content types.

    • Statista does not use OR or AND or NOT as operators within the search box.
    • Searches default to the use of AND when there is a space between terms in the search, returning only results that match on all entered terms. Changing search accuracyto Wide changes AND to OR, which then will match documents on any one term entered.
    • Changing search accuracy to high searches only the most highly relevant items and searches only for items that match on all entered terms.
    • You can also limit to a specific year.
    • You can limit to a particular country or region.

    How to Change Data Visualizations

    • On most statistics you can change the chart type.
    • Click the gear to the side of the chart.

    • Select the type you need from the displayed choices, such as line graph, bar chart, or a data table.
    • You can then download the chart for use in your paper under Download. Many graphs will allow you to download them as images.

    Citing From Statista

    • Some articles, particularly topic overviews, will have listed authors.
    • Individual statistics will list a source. Use the source as the author.
    • Individual statistics have a citation helper that is not updated for APA 7.
    • All other documents, such as the dossiers and reports, that do not list other authors or sources, will be cited with Statista as the author.
    • Statista publishes original content, so the database is listed when not the author.
    • Label all images you are citing with a content type label in [brackets].

    Sage Data

    Sage Data provides access to data from licensed and public domain datasets within an easy-to-use interface. With this dynamic tool, you can scan the contents of the collection, select subjects and variables of interest, and view your data in side-by-side tables and charts.

    What Datasets Are Included in Sage Data Statistical Datasets?

    To see which datasets are included in Sage Data, go to the Sage Data home page and view the "Browse Data by" section to see which Subjects and Sources are available to begin your search.  Explore by Subject areas such as Education, International Relations and Trade, Population and Income, etc. Explore by Source to view organizations that provide data, such as the Census Bureau.

    Navigating and Interacting With Sage Data

    Enter via the GCU library’s website. Begin exploring by selecting one of the options you'll find on the Sage Data home page:

    Datasets -select this option to go directly to the data.

    Search -for keywords of interest.

    Browse - by broad subject or data source providers.

    • After selecting the data, you can display that data in a number of ways. By selecting one of the four icons in the central tool bar, you can show the data as trends over time, a comparative ranking, a map, or a pie chart.

    • Chart Options provides several alternatives for the style of the visualization, depending on whether you have selected Trend, Map, Rank, or Pie Chart. The example below shows options for Trend Views:

    • Below you'll see the options for Rank charts:

    • The Rank By option, where available, allows you to choose the criteria for ranking, as in this example, where "personal consumption expenditures" can be ranked by state, indicator, or specific line item within the selected indicator:

    • Use the search box in pop-out windows to quickly land on an item of interest:

    • Hovering over an item in the chart legend makes that item less prominent in the chart. If you click on an item, it will be removed from your chart view.

    • Interested in homing in on just a portion of a trend? Click on the beginning data point of interest and drag the cursor to the end point. Clicking on the "Reset zoom" option will reset the chart to the full trend.

    • Find related data by clicking on the Subject Terms links in the descriptions below the visualizations:

    Comparing Datasets

    • Compare multiple datasets using the Compare Data option. Clicking on the option opens checkboxes in the listing of datasets, as below:

    • When comparing datasets, use the Filter option to toggle between the selected datasets and make new selections to further modify your chart:

    Using the Calculator Tool

    • Use the Calculator to derive new data values.    
    • Click on the Calculator icon on the far right of the center tool bar. You can either type in  your own formula or select a preformatted formula, as in the example below.

    1. Create your indicator name.

    2. Select the precision of the data value you are creating.

    3. To select a preformatted formula, open the drop down menu in the Function bar.

    • After saving to the chart, a new data column displays in the chart, along with the new trend.

    Using the Mapping Tool

    Sage Data comes with a mapping feature. Sage Data maps are powered by Google Maps API, which allows for precise rendering of map images based on user geography selection and zoom level. Users are able to choose from several basic map types: thematic or terrain maps or satellite. Quickly move back and forth between views to decide on the view that best communicates the point you're trying to make.

    • The large +/-sign on the lower right of the map image can be used to zoom in for map detail or out to take a bird's eye view. Use the expand/contract icon on the upper right of the map image to view in full screen, and easily toggle back to the window view.

    • Open Map Chart Options, also on the center tool bar, to customize your map with respect to the number of colors to use in your map and your preferred color palette. The colors easily communicate the states with the most libraries and the fewest:

    • To export the map(and the data associated with the geographic area), use the Shapefile export option on the Export menu. This will export the information to a GIS-usable file that you can use in other mapping software.

    Viewing Tabular Data

    • View the underlying data by clicking on the Table link in the center tool bar. 

    1. Export data to a preferred file format.

    2. Toggle between ascending and descending row order by clicking on the column heading.

    3. Search within data values in the table using precise search options.

    Creating a DOI and Permalink

    • Send your visualizations and data to yourself, faculty or other students by creating permanent links (DOIs), using the "Create DOI link" that appears below the charts. The URL link provided ensures that the person viewing it will see the exact version of the chart at the time you created it.

    Searching in Sage Data

    • Use the search box in the Sage Data header to search for topics of interest. In the example below, "Brazil" is entered into the search box. 

    • After you run the search, a listing of results opens. Scroll the results to select a dataset of interest, which will return you to that specific data and chart. You can also filter results to the left of the results listing to narrow results by subject terms, source, database, and geography. 

    Exporting Data

    • There are many ways to deliver data from Sage Data Statistical Datasets using the Export button located on the menu bar:

    • The options allow you to export data for manipulation in other programs, infographics for use in work products, and pdfs of data views, and more.

    • If you want to export the underlying data, use Excel, Delimited Text, SAS, or XML options. All of these options allow users to download the data into different programs (spreadsheets and a statistical software package) and manipulate it there. If you have used the Calculator feature to create formulas for additional data points, these data points are downloaded, as well.
    • The option to download to a Shapefile (only available for map views) allows users to export the map information to software that displays maps to ESRI requirements.
    • If you need to export data for importing into statistical software program(s), consult the documentation provided for that program for what format it needs. Available export formats for Sage Data Statistical Datasets include Delimited Text, Excel, and SAS, which can be imported into these common software programs, as below:
      • SPSS (Delimited Text and Excel)
      • SAS (SAS) 
      • STAT (Excel)

     Images

    There are four options for exporting the charts you create and the accompanying descriptions:

    • PDF - from the Export menu.
    • DataSheets - by creating a DOI link that resolves to a view that can be printed (using browser or keyboard options, e.g., Ctrl + P).
    • Embeds - generate an embed code that can be entered in your own web applications (eg, a website, WordPress blog, etc.). See below for more detail.

    Example: Number of Students Attending Charter Schools in Pennsylvania

    • Browse the datasets available on Public and Private Elementary and Secondary Education in the Browse by Subject listing under Education:

    • The chart below shows a trend view of the growth in number of charter schools in Pennsylvania based on data from the School Census Summary:

    • Switch to a rank view and now the chart below ranks Pennsylvania counties by number of students attending charter schools using data from the School Census Detail dataset:

    • The statistics available in the Sage Data repository on public education typically report to the state, county, and local education agency, and some report by grade level and race. See the Criteria Panel below from the School Census Detail dataset and review the many options for comparison, including geography, year, grade level, race, and gender:

    Example: Locating and Comparing Business Trends

    • Log in to Sage Data through your library's website. Dive in for a preliminary look at the available data by searching location names in the Quick Search box in the upper right of the Sage Data interface:
    • (("Las Vegas" OR 'Clark County") AND nevada).
    • Note that the search results display includes an option to Show all results or Group by similar results. Also notice that you are able to filter the search results by Database, Source provider of the dataset, and geographic level of detail of the data.

    • Clicking on a result link will return you to the exact spot in  Sage Data where you can view the data visualization and analyze underlying data further. For example in the chart below, we compare average amount per return for total income vs salaries and wage income for Clark County tax filers.

    • Another way to assess where to find metrics of relevance is to explore the Browse by Subject and Browse by Source areas on the left-hand side of the interface:

    • In the chart below, we've used data from the Census Bureau County Business Patterns database to show annual payroll of casino hotels vs other hotels and motels in Clark County:
