Grand Canyon University is dedicated to empowering students on their educational journey. We understand that each student has unique learning needs, which is why we offer a diverse range of support services tailored to help you succeed academically.

Multiple Ways to Access Academic Support

At Grand Canyon University there are multiple avenues for you to access the academic assistance you need. GCU offers personalized tutoring services, delivering virtual academic support for students in online classes or at Accelerated Bachelor of Nursing (ABSN) locations. Additionally, we offer in-person assistance for undergraduate students attending classes on the Phoenix Campus. 

Meet Our Academic Support Team

Peer Tutors:Our peer tutors, who are students like you, offer relatable advice and share effective study techniques providing a supportive peer-to-peer learning experience.

Instructional Assistants (IAs):These professionals work closely with faculty to ensure that instructional goals are met and that students receive comprehensive content support. Instructional assistants can guide you through more complex subject matter and offer personalized assistance. IAs are available on the Phoenix Campus College Centers during the academic year and IA availability in classes may vary based on class size.

Faculty Support:Our dedicated faculty members are also available to provide guidance and mentorship. With their deep subject matter expertise, they can assist in clarifying concepts and help you excel in your academic pursuits.

Academic Centers for Excellence (ACE) Undergraduate Peer Tutoring

Undergraduate students of the Phoenix Campus in all programs of study, students in the Accelerated Bachelor of Nursing (ABSN) program, and those taking online pre-nursing prerequisite courses can schedule an appointment with an Academic Centers for Excellence (ACE) peer tutor through the Symplicity (Career Connections) scheduling platform for subject course tutoring and success coaching. 

Virtual peer tutoring appointments are available for ABSN students and students taking online pre-nursing prerequisite courses. 

Walk-in assistance is available at all four campus ACE locations during open hours for undergraduate students of the Phoenix Campus. However, the availability of peer tutors may vary, so it is recommended to schedule an appointment in advance to ensure support. Please note that during the first and last two weeks of Fall and Spring semesters, only walk-in assistance is offered, no appointments available.

Schedules and course availability are subject to change based on peer tutor availability. ACE peer tutoring services are free of charge.

1. After logging in on the link above with your GCU student credentials, follow the prompts for multi-factor authentication, then click on "Appointments" on the top right. For help with making an appointment, review Technical Support's help page .

2. Scroll down and click on the purple "Request New Appointment" button.

3. Click on the dropdown menu for "Type" and select a tutoring subject. You may also select "How you want to meet?" for in person on the Phoenix campus or virtual options. Scroll down to view all appointment filtering options.

4. Scroll down in the left hand area and click the  "Check Availability" button to view available peer tutoring appointment options.

5. On the right hand side, click on the purple link for the peer tutor's name that corresponds to the date, time, and locations that works for you.

6.  Review the appointment information and insert a short note indicating what topics you would like assistance with during your peer tutoring appointment and click the purple "Submit Request" button.

7.  Your appointment is now booked!  You will receive a confirmation email to your @my.gcu.edu student email with details of the appointment. You can also locate the information in the Symplicity (Career Connections) system under "appointments". 

8.  To reschedule or cancel a previously booked appointment, select the three dots to the right of the appointment date and time and choose cancel or reschedule.

Academic Centers for Excellence (ACE) Writing Support for Doctoral Learners

If you are a doctoral learner in your first four courses of your program of study, you can self-schedule a virtual doctoral writing support appointment with a graduate-level peer tutor by clicking the link below. Review course availability on the Academic Centers for Excellence page .

AI Tutors

Explore GCU's AI Resource Center, including AI tutors designed to support students in selected math, science, and nursing courses.  These innovative tools serve as a personal tutor, capable of assisting on a range of inquiries, from fundamental concepts to complex theories.

Links to access these tutors have been integrated into the curriculum of selected courses.  If your course has an AI tutor available, you are encouraged to engage regularly to clarify course materials, explore topics in depth, or prepare for an exam.

Faculty Support

GCU Faculty are a great resource and are available to help!  For help with locating your faculty's contact information, visit the Technical Support's page Locating Your Instructor's Contact Information.  Also, regularly review your course resources and announcements in your online classroom for additional resources. 

Online Student Tutors

If you are a GCU online student and do not attend classes on the Phoenix Campus, you can schedule a virtual tutoring appointment with the Online Student Tutors department using the link below. For further assistance, contact [email protected] .

Our Online Student Tutors offer comprehensive writing support for all undergraduate and master's level courses, as well as subject-specific support for selected courses below. 

Schedules and course availability are subject to change based on peer tutor availability. Online student tutor services are free of charge.

Phoenix Campus College Centers

GCU's College-supported Centers on the Phoenix Campus provide online resources and walk-in academic support from peer students, instructional assistants, or faculty during open hours. Use the links below to explore resources, locations, and operating hours throughout the Fall and Spring semesters.

PrepStep Test Prep Online

PrepSTEP is an online suite of resources to help you build basic skills and review the fundamentals. You will need to create an account, see the instructions below for how.

  • Read prep books.
  • Take tutorials.
  • Start and stop practice tests and tutorials and pick up where you left off.

Help With Writing, Reading, & Study Skills:

You must create a personal account to use PrepSTEP.

  1. Access PrepSTEP using the link on this page. You will need to log in with your GCU username and password.

  2. Click "Sign In/Register" at the top. 

  3. Click "Register". 

  4. Fill out the form and register for a free account using an email and password of your choice. Please note that you do not need to include your Student ID# or Course Section #.  

  5. Click Home or choose a center from the Centers menu on the navigation bar to begin using the resources.

To begin a practice test or tutorial:

  1. Click on the category you need.

  2. Choose the test or skill you need to work on. 

  3. Choose the resource you need. You can begin a practice test or read a test book. 

To continue a test or exam:

  1. Log in by clicking Sign In/Register.

  2. If you are already logged in, click on your name and choose "My Center".

  3. Find the test or tutorial you wish to continue and click on the title. 

  4. You can also delete your progress by clicking the trash can icon next to the title.

ThinkingStorm

ThinkingStorm is an online tutoring service available for all GCU students offering virtual on-demand, appointment-based, and asynchronous tutoring support. ThinkingStorm's on-demand tutoring services are available from 10am-4am EST, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. 

GCU will pay for the first five (5) hours of ThinkingStorm tutoring that you use. This prepaid amount of five (5) hours is allocated per year (January 1st-December 31st). Once you expend your annual prepaid hours, you will have the option of continuing with ThinkingStorm tutoring services, but you will need to pay out of pocket for the additional time used after the first five (5) hours.
