RefWorks & EndNote: EndNote Getting Started

This LibGuide introduces you to RefWorks and its citation management features.

What is EndNote?

About EndNote

EndNote is a web-based citation management software that can be used to store, organize, and use citations.  GCU provides access to EndNote Basic and Web of Science, which means that users will see Times Cited counts as well as links to Web of Science in your EndNote account.

EndNote requires you to create an account to access the program.  Always log in to EndNote through the GCU Library website .  GCU does not have access to your EndNote account, so if you forget your username or password, you will need to request your login information through EndNote.

Creating an Account

Create an EndNote Account

  • Navigate to the library homepage at http://library.gcu.edu/
  • Click on RefWorks & EndNote Web
  • Underneath the EndNote logo, click on Login or Sign up.
  • You may be prompted to login with your GCU username & passwords to access the EndNote log in page.
  • Once the EndNote log in page loads, click on Register .
  • Enter your information in the form and click Register .

Adding References to EndNote

The Export tool is located different places in different databases. Examples for EBSCO and ProQuest are below, but in general look for:

  • Export
  • Save
  • A link on the database provided citation tool

In EBSCO

  • Locate the article you need.
  • Click the article title to view the full record
  • Click Exporton the Toolsmenu 
  • Choose the citation manager you are using: RefWorks, or EndNote or others.
  • You will be prompted to login.

In ProQuest:

  • Locate the article you need,
  • Click on the title
  • Click on All Options 
    more options is part of the tools menu that includes download and cite
  • Choose EndNote under Citation Export 
    citation export is a section of the tools that appear on a popup
  • Click Continue on the pop up menu.
  • You will be prompted to login.

In Google Scholar:

  • Locate the article you want to export.
  • Click the "quotes" below the article the citation button is a double quotes
  • Below the various citation styles, click on EndNote.

Create a Bibliography

  • Click on the Formattab in EndNote and select Bibliography.
  • Select the location for the references you wish to include in the bibliography.
  • Select the citation style for the bibliography. 
  • Select the file format.
  • Click either Save, E-mail, or Preview & Print.
