Turn off Gemini for Google Cloud products

This document explains how to turn off Gemini for Google Cloud products, including the following:

For information about changing the settings that control sharing Gemini Cloud Assist prompts and responses with Google, see Configure prompt and response sharing for Gemini Cloud Assist .

Before you begin

  • To update a Gemini for Google Cloud subscription, make sure you have the billing.subscriptions.update Identity and Access Management (IAM) permission. The billing.subscriptions.update permission is included in the roles/billing.admin IAM role, or you can add the permission to a custom role.

Turn off Gemini Cloud Assist

To turn off Gemini Cloud Assist, do the following:

Console

  1. To limit access for specific users in your organization, remove Identity and Access Management permissions for Gemini Cloud Assist:

    1. Go to the IAM & Adminpage.

      Go to IAM & Admin

    2. In the Principalcolumn, find a principal for which you want to remove access to Gemini Cloud Assist, and then click Edit principalin that row.

    3. In the Edit accesspane, do the following:

      1. Locate the Gemini for Google Cloud Userrole, and then click Delete role.

      2. Locate the Gemini Cloud Assist Userrole, and then click Delete role.

      3. Locate the Service Usage Consumerrole, and then click Delete role.

    4. Click Save.

  2. Turn off the Gemini Cloud Assist API ( geminicloudassist.googleapis.com ):

    1. Go to the Enabled APIs & servicespage.

    2. To select the Google Cloud project where you want to disable the Gemini Cloud Assist API, do one of the following:

      • In the Select a recent projectsection, click a Google Cloud project.

      • Use the Select a resourcedialog:

        1. Click Select project.
        2. In the Select a projectdialog, click the name of the Google Cloud project for which you want to disable the API.
    3. Click the Gemini Cloud Assist APIentry. If you need help finding the API, use the Searchfield in the Google Cloud console toolbar.

    4. Click Disable API.

  3. Optional: If you are disabling all Gemini for Google Cloud products, then repeat the previous step to turn off the Gemini for Google Cloud API.

gcloud

  1. In the Google Cloud console, activate Cloud Shell.

  2. To limit access for specific users in your organization, remove Identity and Access Management permissions for Gemini Cloud Assist:

    1. Remove the role roles/cloudaicompanion.user using the command gcloud projects remove-iam-policy-binding :

      gcloud projects remove-iam-policy-binding PROJECT_ID 
      \
      --member= PRINCIPAL 
      --role=roles/cloudaicompanion.user

      Replace the following:

      • PROJECT_ID : the ID of your Google Cloud project—for example, 1234567890 .
      • PRINCIPAL : the identifier for the principal—for example, user:cloudysanfrancisco@gmail.com .

      The output is a list of policy bindings.

    2. Repeat the previous step for the following roles:

      • roles/geminicloudassist.user
      • roles/serviceusage.serviceUsageConsumer
  3. Turn off the Gemini Cloud Assist API ( geminicloudassist.googleapis.com ) using the command gcloud services disable :

    gcloud services disable geminicloudassist.googleapis.com

    If successful, the command produces output similar to the following:

    Waiting for async operation operations/acf.e9d0943b-55d9-4ac0-8af4-745e1b8983f8 to complete...
     Operation finished successfully.
  4. Optional: If you are disabling all Gemini for Google Cloud products, then repeat the previous step to turn off the cloudaicompanion.googleapis.com API.

Turn off Gemini Code Assist

To turn off Gemini Code Assist, do the following:

  1. In the Google Cloud console, go to the Admin for Geminipage.

    Go to Admin for Gemini

  2. Click Purchased products.

  3. Select the applicable billing account, and then click Continue to Admin for Gemini page.

  4. From the list of purchased products, select the Gemini Code Assist subscription. The name of the subscription depends on the name given when Gemini Code Assist was set up.

  5. Review the subscription details and check whether Auto renewis set to Onor Off.

    • If automatic renewal is off, then your Gemini Code Assist subscription is set to end on the subscription end date.
    • If automatic renewal is on, then click Manage subscriptionand proceed to the next step.
  6. For Automatic subscription renewal, select No, don't automatically renew, and then click Continue.

  7. If you agree to the terms of purchase, select I agree to the terms of this purchase, and then click Save changes.

  8. Optional: If you are disabling all Gemini for Google Cloud products, then turn off the Gemini for Google Cloud API .

Turn off Gemini in BigQuery

To turn off all Gemini for Google Cloud products including BigQuery, see Turn off the Gemini for Google Cloud API . Otherwise, you can limit access for specific users.

To limit access for specific users, you can remove Identity and Access Management permissions for the feature. For a list of permissions required for Gemini in BigQuery, see Grant IAM roles on a Google Cloud project in "Set up Gemini in BigQuery."

Users can also turn off Gemini in BigQuery features:

  1. In the Google Cloud console, go to the BigQuerypage.

  2. In the toolbar, click pen_spark Gemini.

  3. Clear the Gemini features that you want to turn off.

Turn off Gemini in Colab Enterprise

To turn off Gemini in Colab Enterprise, do the following:

  1. In the Google Cloud console, go to the Colab Enterprise Notebookspage.

  2. Open a notebook.

  3. In the Colab Enterprisetoolbar, click pen_spark Help me code.

  4. Clear the Gemini features that you want to turn off.

  5. In the Google Cloud console, go to the Admin for Geminipage.

  6. Click Purchased products.

  7. Select the applicable billing account. and then click Continue to Admin for Gemini page.

  8. From the list of purchased products, select the Gemini in Colab Enterprise subscription with the name vertex.

  9. Click Turn Off, and then click Confirm.

  10. Optional: If you are disabling all Gemini for Google Cloud products, then turn off the Gemini for Google Cloud API .

Turn off Gemini in Looker

Gemini in Looker features are available in Looker (original) instances, in Looker (Google Cloud core) instances, and in Looker Studio as part of a Looker Studio Pro subscription. You can turn off the Gemini in Looker features that appear in Looker (Google Cloud core) independently from those in Looker Studio.

Turn off Gemini in Looker for Looker (original)

To turn off the Gemini in Looker features that appear in Looker (original), do the following:

  1. In the Looker (original) instance, go to the Platformsection of the Adminpanel, and select the Gemini in Lookerpage.
  2. Under Gemini in Lookerenablement, clear the Enable Gemini in Lookersetting.

You can also reach out to Support if you want to remove the option to enable Gemini in Looker entirely.

Turn off Gemini in Looker for Looker (Google Cloud core)

To turn off the Gemini in Looker features that appear in Looker (Google Cloud core), do the following:

  1. In the Google Cloud console, navigate to the Google Cloud project that contains the Looker (Google Cloud core) instance for which you want to turn off Gemini in Looker.
  2. On the Instancespage, click the name of the instance for which you want to turn off Gemini in Looker.
  3. Click Edit.
  4. Expand the Gemini in Lookersection.
  5. Clear the Geminicheckbox.
  6. Save your changes.

Turn off Gemini in Looker for Looker Studio

To turn off the Gemini in Looker features that appear in Looker Studio as part of a Looker Studio Pro subscription, do the following:

  1. Sign in to Looker Studio .
  2. Click the User settingsgear icon, and then select the Gemini settingstab.
  3. On the Gemini in Lookerpage, identify the Google Cloud project that is associated with your Looker Studio Pro subscription.
  4. Turn off the Enabledtoggle for that project.

Turn off the Gemini for Google Cloud API

After you turn off all other Gemini for Google Cloud products for your project, turn off the Gemini for Google Cloud API ( cloudaicompanion.googleapis.com ). For more information, see Disabling services .
