Advertising on Google Maps is a powerful way to attract nearby customers. Search Ads on Maps help businesses with a physical location or service area reach users.

This article explains how to show ads on Google Maps.

Note: Local search ads are different from how your business's organic listing (not an ad) appears on Google Maps, such as an incorrect address or pin location. Where your ads show on Google Maps

Your ads can show in Google Maps in a variety of ways. Local campaigns may show ads as Promoted pins, Map search ads, or Map suggest ads. Promoted pins appear as square pins on the map, standing out from the usual round pins. Map search ads and Map suggest ads appear in the Google Maps search results.   • Service area businesses:If you serve customers at their location and don't have a physical storefront, ensure your Google Business Profile is set up as a service area business. Learn more about Local Services Ads .
  • Local inventory ads and free local listings:If you have physical stores and want to advertise products available for in-store purchase or local pickup, you should use local inventory ads or free local listings. Learn how to Implement local inventory ads and free local listings .
Note: Currently, you can’t serve ads exclusively in Google Maps.

How to review your Google Maps ad performance

Click history

To review how your search ads on Google Maps are doing, check your performance data. Search ads can generate 3 types of clicks:

  • Get location detail clicks: when people click to expand ads from the search results list
  • Get direction clicks: when people click to get directions to your business
  • Mobile clicks-to-call clicks: when people click to call your business

To review performance of each kind of click from your search ads on Google Maps:

  1. Click  Campaigns, Ad groups, Ads, or Keywordsin the page menu.
  2. Click the Segment iconSegment, and then select Click type.

Conversion metrics

You can also track other conversion metrics like online visits and store visits from your Google Ads account.

You can view conversion metrics like Store visits in your campaign reports . Here’s how to add them to your main report:

  1. Select the CampaignsiconCampaigns Icon, and then Campaigns from the “Campaigns” drop-down menu.
  2. Select the ColumnsiconA picture of the Google Ads columns iconabove the statistics table.
  3. Use the search bar to find statistics you want to add, like “Store visits,” “Store visit value,” and more.

Many conversion metrics like online visits can be reviewed with conversion tracking. Create conversion actions in your Google Ads account that help you measure the success of your Google Maps ad performance. Here’s how to create conversions:

  1. In your Google Ads account, select the GoalsiconGoals Icon.
  2. Scroll down and select Create conversion action.
  3. When created, you can view your conversion report by selecting the GoalsiconGoals Iconand selecting Summaryfrom the “Conversions” drop-down menu.
