There was nothing more iconic in the 2000s than Princess Diaries and rightly so. This coming-of-age series, filled with humor, grace, and unforgettable dialogues resonated with the audience at the time and continues to do so.
These heartful lines said by the movie’s characters are still relevant to this day. Find out what these dialogues were.
Prince Phillipe said, “Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear. The brave may not live forever, but the cautious do not live at all.”
“From now on you’ll be traveling the road between who you think you are and who you can be. The key is to allow yourself to make the journey.”
“”Me? A princess? Shut up!” This one had the crowd rolling off their seats out of laughter. Mia’s reaction when she found out about her being the princess was iconic without a doubt.
When Mia, an ordinary teenager, finds out that she is a literal princess, her reaction is utter confusion. Her wide-eyed surprise coupled with this quote is the perfect reaction.
On the event of her birthday, Mia exclaimed, “You know, most kids shop for a car for their sixteenth birthday, not a country”. This served as a subtle reminder about the royal responsibilities that suddenly fell on Mia’s shoulders.
As Mia steps into the role of a princess, she realizes that taking on this role is not just about fancy titles and dressing up. It requires resilience, courage, and getting out of one’s comfort zone.
In the first princess diaries, Mia is still insecure and not comfortable with her bushy brows and curly hair. At the time of her makeover, the princess said out loud, “This is as good as it’s gonna get”.
This was Mia’s way of handling the situation. Throughout the film, we see that Mia opted for self-deprecating humor to cope with matters at hand.
Whenever you arrive late to an event or party, you’ve to fish out the “A queen is never late. Everyone else is simply early” line. This line of Queen Clarisse showed the essence of her role in the monarchy, which was unflappable.
Even though Mia’s grandmother was strict in important aspects, this portrays that the Queen didn’t care what others thought. Besides, being clever, this line reveals Clarrisse’s confidence.
This exchange between Queen Clarisse and Mia had everyone laughing till they got a tummyache. Queen Clarrise complimented Mia by saying, “Mia you look so clean” and in return, Mia replied, “Thank you.
And you look so……. clean”. This dialogue exchange reflects Mia’s wittiness and her trait of speaking the truth especially when she’s caught off-guard.
Mia is overwhelmed by the sudden onslaught of all the royal duties she has to keep up with. The sudden revelation that Mia is to succeed her grandmother was more than the girl could handle.
In return, she said, “I don’t want to run my own country. I just want to pass the tenth grade”. This line was a reminder of the everyday pressures that were being pushed on her.
Mia was the underdog of her high school always a target of the lowly and insecure bullies. Her first day of high school was possibly the worst day ever resulting in Mia saying, “I am invisible, and I am wet”.
Mia got into an accident on the first day of high school when she accidentally slipped and fell during gym class.
A powerful and impactful quote that has stuck with fans from all over the world is, “Nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent”. Joe once again won everyone’s hearts with this line he said to Mia.
This quote served as a turning point in the movie as Mia was transitioning from being a normal teenager to a princess. This was a powerful reminder for Mia and everyone that their self-worth doesn’t come from other’s perceptions.
Mia’s humor was unmatched throughout the movie series. One such evidence of this fact is when Mia says, “I look like an asparagus”.
This line was said as Mia was critiquing her look in the mirror. The princess was wearing a green bathing suit and she concluded with the fact that she did look like a cute asparagus.
“Just in case I’m not enough of a freak already, let’s add a tiara” once again reflected Mia’s reluctance to take on her duty as a royal member in the court of Genovia. This line also reflects Mia’s sarcastic personality which the viewers loved.
This dialogue is preceded by Mia being anxious and awkward. The tiara was a symbol of what was to come and this made Mia more nervous than ever.
Mia was the expert at dishing out sarcastic comments and one such example is when the princess said, “I can’t be a princess. I’m still waiting for normal body parts to arrive”. This showed Mia’s quirky sense of humor about her teenage body.
This line also reflects the insecurities a teenager goes through regarding their body. At the end of the day, Mia was still a normal teenager who didn’t want to take on the worries of a throne.
Lily and Mia’s relationship was the perfect one, a friendship built on love and witty comments. In an unfiltered conversation between the friends, Lilly says to Mia, “How many times a day do you put your foot in your mouth”?
Lilly was a brutally honest and supportive friend of Mia’s throughout the series. She was by Mia’s side through thick and thin.
One thing Mia didn’t shy away from, later on in the series, was putting people in their rightful place, especially the bullies. Over time, Mia garnered much-needed confidence and it proved to be game-changing for her.
Mia said to Lana, her mean bully, “Yeah, I am a freak. But you know what? Someday I just might grow out of that, but you will never stop being mean”.

Mia acted like an old soul at various times during the movie. She was full of grace and this was reflected in her line, “Then I realized how many stupid times a day I used the word ‘I’.”
“In fact, probably all I ever do is think about myself, and how lame is that when there’s, like, 7 billion other people out there on the planet”.
