Lauren Akins, the wife of country music star Thomas Rhett , recently talked in an interview with I Am Second about a hard time in their marriage.
After having two children in just three months — one through adoption and one by birth — Lauren felt a lot of stress and started to feel resentful toward Thomas.
She was overwhelmed with managing the adoption, pregnancy, and new parenthood while Thomas was busy with his music career.
In the interview, she shared how these feelings affected their relationship and how they worked through these challenges together.
Lauren and Thomas decided to adopt a child from Uganda, and that’s how their daughter, Willa Gray, became part of their family.
During the adoption process, Lauren discovered she was pregnant.
This unexpected pregnancy meant she had to handle the complexities of international travel and adoption paperwork while dealing with severe pregnancy symptoms, including extreme nausea.
Much of the adoption responsibilities fell on Lauren.
She was the one traveling to Uganda, taking care of Willa Gray, and managing the foster-to-adopt process for over a year.
All this while, she was experiencing intense morning sickness, often vomiting multiple times a day.
During this time, she started to miss Thomas, who was busy touring in America, and this absence led to feelings of resentment.
When both daughters finally came home, the challenges didn’t end.
Thomas continued his touring schedule , and Lauren felt overwhelmed by her new role as a mother of two young children .
She felt as though her life had come to a standstill while Thomas’s career continued to thrive.
She missed the days when they were more in sync and found it hard to cope with the changes.
The stress and lack of communication led to frequent arguments.
Lauren recalls a particularly intense moment when she told Thomas that she hated his career and felt completely alone.
Thomas, showing his concern, asked if she wanted him to quit his job.
This question made Lauren realize how much he cared and prompted her to reconsider what she really wanted.
Instead of asking Thomas to quit his career, they decided to seek professional help.
They enrolled in a mini-intensive counseling session, which proved to be incredibly beneficial.
Through counseling, they learned how to communicate more effectively and express their feelings honestly.
This helped them reconnect and also adapt better to their roles as parents .
They even welcomed another daughter, Lennon, in early 2020.
Despite the progress, their journey wasn’t without further difficulties.
After the birth of their fourth child, Lillie Carolina, in November 2021, Lauren experienced postpartum depression.
However, the communication skills they had learned in counseling helped them navigate this tough time.
They supported each other and managed to get through it together.
Now, as parents of four children, Lauren and Thomas are open to the idea of having more kids and even considering adoption again in the future.
However, they have decided to take a break for now to enjoy their current family setup.
Thomas mentioned earlier this year that they are letting things settle before thinking about expanding their family further.
Thomas Rhett and Lauren Akins have known each other since they were kids.
They started dating in high school and, after a few ups and downs, realized they were meant to be together.
They got married in 2012 and have built a beautiful family over the years.
They adopted their first daughter, Willa Gray, from Uganda in 2017, and shortly after, Lauren gave birth to their second daughter, Ada James.
In early 2020, they welcomed their third daughter, Lennon Love. Their fourth child, Lillie Carolina, was born in November 2021.
Thomas and Lauren have a loving, supportive relationship, and their journey together includes both joyous and challenging moments.
Several country music stars have chosen to adopt children, enriching their families with love and care.
For instance, Sheryl Crow has adopted two sons, Wyatt and Levi.Crow has often spoken about the joy her children bring to her life.
Another country star, Rodney Atkins , adopted his son Elijah and has shared how important family is to him.
Additionally, Martina McBride and her husband adopted two daughters, Emma and Ava, who have become the center of their world.
These country artists have shown that adoption is a beautiful way to expand their families and share their love with children in need of a home.

Lauren Akins shared that she and Thomas Rhett faced significant challenges in their marriage after adopting their first child and having a baby shortly after.
She discussed feeling overwhelmed and resentful as she juggled adoption, pregnancy, and early parenthood while Thomas was away on tour.
The adoption process was stressful for Lauren, who handled much of the paperwork and travel while dealing with severe pregnancy symptoms.
This situation led to feelings of resentment and isolation from Thomas, who was busy with his music career.
A significant turning point came during a heated argument when Lauren expressed her deep frustrations and feelings of loneliness.
Thomas’s response, asking if she wanted him to quit his career, made Lauren realize they needed to find a solution together rather than making drastic decisions.
