When Thor: Ragnarok was released in 2017, fans were surprised that Jane Foster, Thor’s love interest and a key figure in the first two Thor films, did not appear. This decision was based on various factors, from creative direction shifts to the actress’s stance on returning to the franchise.
In this blog, I’ll talk about why Natalie Portman didn’t return for Thor: Ragnarok , the creative decisions behind her absence, and her triumphant return as the Mighty Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder .
Let’s get started!
After the mixed reception of Thor: The Dark World (2013), Marvel Studios brought in Taika Waititi to give the Thor franchise a fresh direction. Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok was built to be bold, humorous, and less bound to Thor’s Earth-based relationships.
Instead, the focus shifted toward Thor’s journey in space, emphasizing new characters like Valkyrie and revitalizing Thor’s character arc.
Waititi and Marvel said this change meant cutting back on elements that tied Thor too closely to Earth, including Jane Foster.
Natalie Portman left the mcu, then came back because she liked what Taika Waititi has done with Ragnarok and wanted to do with L&T. Christian Bale didn’t watch superhero movies except his own but liked Ragnarok so much that he’s in L&T

While Portman played a significant role in the first two Thor films, she expressed feeling limited by her character’s development. In earlier interviews, Portman hinted that her character didn’t have the kind of depth she hoped for in the franchise.
Following Thor: The Dark World , there was speculation that Portman might have felt her character’s role as Thor’s love interest was somewhat one-dimensional.
This creative dissatisfaction likely contributed to her absence in Thor: Ragnarok , which offered limited opportunity to bring Jane Foster into the cosmic storyline.
The decision to remove Jane Foster sparked discussions among fans, as her character was not only a key connection between Thor and Earth but also a brilliant scientist.
Foster’s sudden absence left many wondering about the direction Marvel would take in balancing the development of new characters with continuity in the franchise.
Although Jane Foster was briefly referenced in Thor: Ragnarok , her absence was left largely unexplained in the story, causing some fans to speculate about the likelihood of her return.
For nearly a decade after The Dark World , Jane Foster did not reappear in the MCU , aside from a brief scene in Avengers: Endgame , which used archival footage to show her presence in the reality-altering sequence.
Her limited role in Endgame added to the confusion among fans regarding her future in the Marvel franchise, leaving her return status up in the air.
After her hiatus from the MCU, Natalie Portman’s return as Jane Foster, taking on the mantle of the “Mighty Thor” in Thor: Love and Thunder , was highly anticipated.
Taika Waititi’s decision to introduce Jane as the Mighty Thor excited fans and offered Portman an opportunity to bring more depth and action to her character.
This change not only adds a significant arc to Jane Foster’s story but also reintegrates her as a powerful figure in the MCU.
When Thor: Ragnarok hit theatres in 2017, it marked a tonal and stylistic shift for the Thor franchise, steering away from the Earth-bound stories that featured Jane Foster , played by Natalie Portman.
For many fans, the absence of Jane, a key character from previous Thor films, felt abrupt and left questions unanswered about her future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
After Thor: The Dark World received mixed reviews from audiences and critics alike, Marvel executives sought to revamp the Thor series. The franchise was struggling to find its footing, and The Dark World became one of the lowest-rated films in the MCU.
To address this, Marvel hired Taika Waititi , known for his comedic and visually distinctive style, to take the Thor character in a new direction.
Waititi aimed to break away from the traditional superhero formula by infusing more humor, color, and unconventional storytelling, positioning Ragnarok as an intergalactic adventure rather than a continuation of Earth-centric themes.
One of the first shifts in Waititi’s vision was to reduce the emphasis on Thor’s relationship with Jane Foster. The storyline in Ragnarok took Thor on a cosmic journey across the universe, from Asgard to the chaotic planet Sakaar.
Given the story’s focus on Thor’s evolution, new characters like Valkyrie and Korg were introduced, and the storyline did not allow much room for Thor’s Earth-bound love interest, Jane Foster, to fit organically into the new plot.
While the shift in creative direction was one reason for Portman’s absence, her own perspective on her role in the franchise played a part as well.
Although she had portrayed Jane Foster, an accomplished astrophysicist, and Thor’s love interest, Portman reportedly felt her character lacked significant development or complexity in the MCU.
In interviews following Thor: The Dark World , Portman hinted that she had expected more from her role and desired a character arc that delved deeper into Jane’s scientific expertise and personal strength.
At the time, Marvel’s treatment of female characters was often secondary to their male counterparts, with women frequently cast in supportive roles.
Portman’s Jane Foster, despite her scientific brilliance, was often written primarily as Thor’s love interest, which may have contributed to Portman’s reluctance to continue with the role unless she could explore Jane’s potential in a more impactful way.
