Renowned record producer Richard Perry has passed away. A man of talent and ability, Richard Perry’s contributions to the music industry cannot be fully listed down.
From working with aspiring artists with unrecognized talent to re-introducing renowned artists, Perry did it all. For an inside look at the icon’s life, keep reading.
Born on June 18, 1942, in Brooklyn New York, Richard Perry was exposed to a variety of cultures from an early age. Growing up in a place that was brimming with diversity, Richard constantly came into contact with different music styles that would later influence his career.
By the age of 12, Richard was attending rock concerts, especially those of Alan Freed, and these electric performances fueled his love for music. Perry’s day-to-day life was surrounded by rock and roll classics which deepened his passion for music.
Richard Perry started on his journey by taking on musical training lessons. This would lay down the foundation for future achievements that were to come his way.
Classical education included piano allowing Richard to understand the basics of melody and harmony. He also explored guitar and bass training, grounding himself in the contemporary styles.
Richard Perry’s first steps into the music world were marked when he joined the doo-wop group called the Escorts. During the 1950s, this genre was a leading one, quickly gaining popularity for its vocal harmonies and soulful melodies.
Besides performing on the live stage, Perry also found himself fascinated by ins and outs of music, with most of his time spent on the backstage. This fascination and inspiration would set a path of excellence for Richard, making him the most influential music producer in the industry.
Once his degree was completed in 1964, Richard Perry decided to take on a different path, one which included behind-the-scenes music production and songwriting. Equipped with a basic understanding of music theory and composition, along with having a good social network from his time in university.
Richard began working at Kama Sutra Records soon after graduating. This period was crucial for Richard as he got to refine his technical skills. And he was able to master various skills including producing, mixing, and mastering.
Richard Perry’s first breakthrough came in 1968. He was involved in the process of producing Tiny Tim’s debut album called God Bless Tiny Tim .
The album was a hit, with the single “Tiptoe Through the Tulips” becoming a cultural phenomenon. God Bless Tiny Tim reached No. 7 on Billboard 200, highlighting Perry’s talent for creating memorable and marketable tracks, and opened the door for other significant opportunities.
Fats Domino during 1968 was an icon, but he was looking to introduce himself in the changing music industry, and he considered Richard Perry fit for this job. Richard Perry approached the project with great care, as he wanted to keep the distinct aura of Domino’s legacy.
The Fats is Back album was full of soulful renditions and then-recent hits. Even though the album didn’t achieve a great level of critical praise, Domino was able to reintroduce himself, solidifying Perry’s reputation in the industry.
The collaboration between Carly Simon and Richard Perry in 1972 proved to be immensely successful for both parties. The hit You’re So Vain quickly became the national anthem during the 90’s along with being a commercial triumph.
You’re So Vain was quick to climb the Billboard charts, cementing its position at the No.1 spot for 3 weeks. This was a major milestone in Perry’s career as he was able to curate a timeless hit that would be remembered for all the eras to come.
Perry’s streak of collaborating with the demanding artists of the music industry was further lengthened as his expertise was needed by Barbara Streisand. The two worked on several albums, with Stoney End becoming the most memorable.
The album also included songs written by icons like Laura Nyro and Carole King. The title track, Stoney End, garnered popularity and found its way to the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Perry didn’t shy away from tough projects and his commitment was further showcased as he took on the role of producing Ringo , the third studio album by Ringo Starr. This album was a historic landmark as it would include collaboration from all four Beatles members following their breakup in 1970.
The album, of course, was a hit, with singles like Photograph and You’re Sixteen becoming chart-topping hits.
As 1978 rolled out, Richard made a significant move in his career by founding Planet Records. The label’s main goal was to welcome and foster new talent while blending mainstream tunes with innovative sounds.
Planet Records cemented the pathway of success for several artists and groups, with the most notable being The Pointer Sisters . The group, with the help of Perry’s input, gained popularity with hits like I’m So Excited and Jump (For My Love) .
Stewart, in the 2000’s, introduced the new generation to timeless classics. The idea behind the collaboration included taking tunes from the American songbook, comprising of songs by Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Irving Berling, and reimagining them with Stewart’s distinctive voice.
The first album in The Great American Songbook Series was It Had To Be You and this became a major hit. The series was an overall success, taking Perry’s career to new heights.
Richard was a man of impeccable talent, and the industry recognized it. In 2015, he was awarded the prestigious Grammy Trustees Award, signifying his significant contributions to the field of recording.
At the start of his career, Richard was also awarded the Academy of Country Music Award for Single of the Year in 1985. This award was given for producing, All The Girls I’ve Loved Before (Julio Iglesias and Willie Nelson).
Richard Perry kept his personal life away from the public light. His marriages to Linda Goldner and Rebecca Broussard ended in divorce. The most publicized relationship of his life was the one with Acadamy-Award-winning actress and activist Jane Fonda.
The two were seen together at public events and casual outings throughout their relationship, which began in 2009. The two amicably parted ways after 8 years of being together.
In April 2020, Richard Perry released his highly-anticipated memoir, Cloud Nine: Memoirs of a Record Producer. Perry, in the memoir, shared his insights, personal anecdotes, and reflections on his journey from a young aspiring artist to a renowned producer.
The memoir delves into the highs and lows that characterized Perry’s career. Like all of Perry’s works, the memoir received praise for its authenticity.
The producer passed away on Tuesday, December 24, in a Los Angeles Hospital. His friend Daphna Kastner Keitel informed that the cause of death was a cardiac arrest.
