In East Europe, a new class of extreme poverty is emerging, and millions of children are suffering the consequences. The transition from communism to free-market capitalism has resulted in inadequate housing and sanitation(衛生設備), poor medical care, and malnutrition(栄養不良)for children throughout the region. The situation in Albania is among the worst in Europe. With 1/3 of Albanian children surviving on less than $2 a day, it ranks just above the Republic of Congo and Zimbabwe in terms of child malnutrition.
