Freeganism is an anti-consumerism lifestyle that grew out of the anti-globalization and environmentalist movements of the 1990s. Freegans, whose name is a combination of the words "free" and "vegan(極端な菜食主義者)," embrace alternative strategies for living that oppose those of a society they believe is marked by materialism, greed, and waste. Accordingly, they often salvage unspoiled food discarded by supermarkets in order to limit their participation in the capitalist system.
