A: Are the games usually belong to the poultry?
B: Not necessarily. Games may include hare and rabbit, wild boar, venison in Europe. Any meat hunted or caught to eat are the games.
A: In that case, zebra in Africa and bears in China?
B: I think so.
A: 普通、ゲーム（獲物）肉は家禽類に属するかな？
B: そうとは限らないでしょ。ヨーロッパではウサギ肉、イノシシ肉、シカ肉もゲームに入るよ。食べるための獲物として狩られたり捕捉された肉ならゲーム。
A: それならアフリカのシマウマとか中国のクマとかも？
B: そうだと思うけど。
ということで、「G」は「game」で「獲物肉」またはそのまま「ゲーム」と訳しました。
猟の獲物として食べるために狩りの対象となるものです。狩りの獲物をゲームといいます。
英語のレシピーでは、肉料理( meat dish)と鶏肉料理(poultry)がわかれて分類されます。
そして、それぞれの中に、ゲームの料理があるわけです。
肉料理ならシカ肉とかで、鶏肉料理なら鴨、雉、鳩、ヤマウズラ、とか。
ポウルタリーPoultry の訳は、家禽類というのが正しいけど、でも一般には鶏肉料理の鶏肉です。
日本でも雀料理とかありますよね。
最近はゲームに分類される肉でも、本当に猟で取ってくるのではなくて、たいてい家畜として生産されているようです。
でも、今でもイギリスのカントリーサイドに行くと、
とくにクリスマス前には、
肉屋の軒先に、頸を絞められた新鮮な雉やライチョウが、飾りのように下げられます。
狩りで捕ってきたのかどうかはわかりませんが、
それらを買って、羽をむしって、昔ながらに調理する人たちがいるということです。
おいしいこともあるけど、
たいていの日本人には、「ゲイミーgamy」でおいしくありません。
このゲイミーの訳も難しいですが、「野性味臭さ」とでもいうのでしょうか。
日本人ではラム肉でも臭くてだめという人が多いですが、
あれをもっと強くしたものです。種類によっても違いますけど。
日本語には「生臭くてだめ」という表現があります。
これって、やっぱり主に魚がにおう時に使いますよね。
肉類の時にはなんて言うのかなあ。
きっと的確な言葉があるんだろうけど、あんまり使わない気がする。
私は思いつきません。
ともかく、ゲームって、試合とか、ルールのある遊戯とか、勝負とか、駆け引きとか、いろんな意味に使われますね。
猟で獲物となる目標物というところから、獲物が転じて目標とか達成の対象とかにも使われます。
難しい・・・
