Ture Bloodというドラマにはまり、その原作のSookie Stackhouseという本を読んでいます。その中に、ちょっとわからないgiveがありました。

"I don't know her," I said, and felt my knees give.
Sam caught me before I was on the ground, and I had to lean against him.

この文章の前に主人公のSookieは死体を見ているので、それにショックを受けて、ひざの力が抜けるような意味だと思いました。ただ、feelが動詞で、kneesは目的語、じゃあ、giveって何？
そこで、この意味を質問してみたところ、giveには、名詞の意味があることがわかりました。

to feel one’s knees give の意味はこんな感じです。

It means when your knees begin to get weak and you almost fall, from nervousness or a strong feeling.

この質問に答えてくれたのは米国人で、英国ではどうかわからないけど、この表現はよく使われるとのことです。厳密にはイディオムではないけれども、give は時々、柔軟性（flexibility）の意味で使われるそうです。なので、

When we say your knees give, it means they bend, involuntarily because of a strong feeling.

give に関連して、give way という表現も教わりました。

Normally, small muscles keep our knees straight when we are standing. When a person becomes so overwhelmed with emotion, they cannot even control those small muscles, their knees "give way", which is a means of describing that they bend, causing the person to fall.

人間にとってひざは立つためにとても重要な機能を果たしています。そのひざが崩れるということで、立っていられない、になるんですね。
