I have just finished reading the book "Tenshoin Atsuhime" written by Tomiko Miyao. This is her first period novel, but I think it is written very skillfully. She must have thoroughly looked into various things such as history, manners, customs, dialects and so on. What I was impressed most by was Atsuhime's willpower. Although she could have withdrawn herself to her own country and could have lived calmer, she never gave up her role as the highest rank of the shogunate during the turbulent days at the end of Edo era. She wanted to perpetuate the Edo Shogunate. She thought that was her mission.
