Should the death penalty be abolished?

On December 7th last year, the execution of three prisoners in Tokyo and Osaka took place and the top United Nations human rights official has criticized it. Japan is one of the 64 nations that adopt the death penalty in the world. On the other hand, the number of the nations that don't allow the death penalty is 133. The third committee in the United Nations adopted the resolution calling for "a moratorium on the death penalty," was passed by a vote of 104 in favour to 54 against, with 29 abstentions on December 18th, 2007. There is a claim that the death penalty is not illegal under international human rights legislation and that it is the sovereign right of each and every State to determine its own judicial system.

In my humble opinion, the death penalty has many disadvantages and less advantages. So the death penalty should be abolised for the sake of our own life and society.

First of all, there is the claim that the death penalty restrains committing crimes. It seems to be right. However, no scientific evidence for it has been obtained. For instance, Canada abolished the death penalty in 1976. The number of murder rate was 3.09 in 100000 in the general population the previous year. The rate was 2.41 in 1980 and it was 1.85 in 2006. The number of felony has been obviously decreasing. So you can't say the death penalty restrains the crimes.

Secondly, The death penalty has a risk of executing an innocent person. More than 100 death row convicts have been released after revealing their innocence since 1973 in U.S. We have to avoid to execute innocent people.

Thirdly, there is an opinion that the death penalty can ease the feelings of the bereaved family. Partly, it could be ture. However, thinking the risk of killing an innocent person, the death penalty would be better off not adopting. The life imprisonment takes away their whole life from criminals. In this case, the life imprisonment is a kind of heavy punishment same as the death penalty. I agree with the idea that the life imprisonment has to be introduced in Japan. In view of the bereaved family, the information about the offender should be updated regularly.

In conclusion, the death penalty falls far short of the expectations of our society. Moreover, there is the risk of killing an innocent and violating the human rights. For these reasons, I think the death penalty should be abolished.
