昔の格言に「仕事をしてもらえる報酬には2種類ある」と言われており、ひとつはお金でもうひとつは経験ということなのだが、どちらか片方であれば「苦労は買ってでもしてみろ」ということで「迷わず経験を取れ」と言われているのだ。それでも景気が良かったときと同じように働いていて「頑張っているなんて、笑わせるな」ということをいうみたいで、ある経営者などは「僕らは創業の頃、寝る間を惜しんで死ぬ気で働いた。ウチの社員も含め、最近はそうした気持ちが足らない人が多いのではないか」ということを平気で言っているようなのだ。しばしば指摘されることなのだが、「これまでこれでやってきた」という成功体験は、もはや遺物であると肝に銘じなければならなくなっているようなのだ。
ある老舗の割烹の主人が言っていたのだが「日本料理の伝統を守ること、基本をしっかり学ぶことが重要であるのは言うまでもありません。しかし修業と称して『とりあえず老舗に後継者を預ければいい』という考え方以外にも、選択肢はあると知る必要があるでしょう」と、現在の修行の仕方を批判していたのだ。このことは固定観念や常識とされてきた古い価値観にとらわれないようにするにはどうすればいいかということなのだが、このことは会社の色に染まりきっていない人の声に耳を傾けることが、会社や仕事の「おかしなこと」に気付く手身近な方法となり得るはずで、ところが「何も分かっていないのだから、つべこべ言わずに従え」と新人の意見を無視したり、バカにしたりするケースは少なくな
いのだ。
建設現場での新しい施工方法の開拓することもそうなのだが、会社のカイゼン活動や新製品は得てしてひょんなところから生まれるもので、過去の常識から脱却するために新人の疑問を真摯に受け止めることも必要なのだろう。新しくビジネスを始める場合にはもちろん以前の経験や人の話を参考にするのは当然よいことなのだが、それを単純に猿真似してもうまくいくとは限らないのだ。人の話は参考にするのは大切なのだが正確に現状分析をし、現状に合ったやり方を一回一回考えていく必要があるということなのだ。当然のことながらマニュアルはないのだ。なぜなら、その仕事はどんなに他の仕事に似ていても環境や時間軸、そして実行する自分が人とは違うからなのだ。
つまりその仕事は以前に誰もやったことのない仕事ということになるのだが、状況によってさまざまな結末になってしまうのだ。そこには「成功した時は窓の外と見、失敗した時は鏡を見る」という謙虚な気持ちも必要だろう。これは「成功したときは周囲のおかげ、失敗は自分のせいと思いなさい」という意味なのだが、ただひとつ気をつけなければいけないのは、人間というものは一度過ちを犯すと、それを正当化するためにもう一度同じ過ちを犯す傾向にあるということなのだ。誰がやっても同じ結果になるように誘導するのだが、「マニュアルどおりにやりましたが、思ったほどの効果が出ませんでした」という結果になることが、なんと多いことかということになってしまうのだ。
それと私もよく子供や若い衆にも言うのだが、得てして弱点と長所は表裏一体であることが少なくないのだ。視点を変えれば弱みは強みとも言えるもので、例えば「何も考えずにすぐに先走ってしまう」という人がいたとすると無鉄砲ではあるが、これは見方を変えればフットワークが軽いとも取れるわけだ。「優柔不断でリーダーにもかかわらず結論を出すのが遅く、すぐに人の意見に左右される」というのならば、それは慎重な性格で人の意見に耳を傾けられるリーダーであるとも言えるのだ。大切なのは自分の弱点を理解してそれにはまらないように気を付けることが必要なのだ。そして少しでも自分の弱点を強みにつなげる意識を持って行動することが大切なことなのだろう。
