原題は「Open Your Eyes」なので、西洋社会でモデルになることを夢見る
アジア人に対して「そのままの君が美しい」的な意味かと思っていましたが、
作者の ジョン・ウェットン が自ら曲の意味を解説しました。


＜9月20日にウェットンがゲストブックに書き込んだ内容の抜粋＞

I was on a boat approaching a rocky bay on the island of Ibiza,
and I saw a mega famous Hollywood actress ("you have stared a thousand times,
right into the lens") standing in the water,topless and brown as a berry,
looking just good enough to eat (lick,whatever).

多忙だった82年のライブツアーの合間にイビザ島でバカンスを楽しんでいたウェットン。
トップレスで現れたハリウッドの大女優とは誰か？
取って食べたい位に日焼けしていたなんて、なんと正直なウェットン。(笑)


It was a moment to treasure.
We had just come back for a break during the summer of '82 ,
so you could imagine how I was feeling.

Somehow the chorus came to me immediately,and the opening line
---originally "What on earth are you doing, here in the golden world ?
Another situation,yeah,you're a golden girl ".

最初にインスピレーションが沸いた時は、こんな歌詞だったのですね。


It was a moment of sheer infatuation,and a day
that is circled (in gold) in my journal for that year.
Aaaah! Yes,we have fantasies,too!
I changed the words around in the verse,so it didn't sound so much like crap,
but the message in the chorus was a direct instruction to myself.

ヴァースの部分は変えたそうですが、
コーラス部は最初に思いついたままだそうです。


The bridge " If I could stand with you right now....."
didn't appear until much later on,
but it wasn't difficult to put myself back on the beach at San Miquel,
with a visual souvenir that still puts a smile on my face as I write this.

ブリッジ部は後に書いたそうですが当時の情景を思い出しながら、
にやにやしながら書いたのでしょう。


The reason why I came up with the chorus lyric was
that the other two guys in the boat with me were oblivious to her
when she smiled at us as we anchored.

船に同乗していた他の二人の男は、その女優が微笑んでくれたのに気付かなかった。
だから「目を開けて目の前の情景を見ろ」（Open your eyes,
and see the world that stands before you now)になったのだと。


The falsetto line leading into the bridge is a musical quote
from one of her films, co-starring Peter Sellers,
and probably ,for me,one of the best pictures ever made.

ブリッジ部へとつながる裏声は彼女がピーター・セラーズと共演した
映画（たぶん「求むハズ」(The MILLION AIRRESS)？）からの引用だそうで、
これはウェットンが見た映画の中でもベストに入るとのこと。





ウェットンが見たのは別の映画かもしれませんが、
ピーターセラーズとソフィア・ローレンが共演した映画と言うと、
これしかないようですね。


なんか夢もへったくれもない曲なんですねえ。（爆）
