My mother had given me an address for a fraternity house on University Avenue. My cousin Chucky, whom I just slightly knew, had been the fraternity president. He was four years older than me and an all-around successful student in high school--captain of the football team, valedictorian, class president. It was no surprise that he'd become president of the fraternity.

My mom said that she talked to my aunt about calling Chucky and letting me stay there--at least while the place was vacated during the summer and most of its members were gone.
