Back when I was in the 2nd grade, I found a dehydrated tiny snail on the lawn of my father's university. I took him home and took care of it until it grew to have strong shell, and let it go in a small bush in the same campus. I was soo determined to save it, that I used to talk to it whenever I fed it. It remembered my voice, and whenever I talked to it, even though the surrounding would be very dry, the small snail will come out of his shell! It was a kind of maternal instinct, that attached me to this snail. Right after I let the snail loose, I found out that they eat snails in France. I pedged back then that I will never ever eat escargot in my life, for the sake of my pet snail!
When he invited me over for dinner with his French-South African friend back in Pretoria (I was 30 yld then still single), he insisted that I try this best escargot he's ever tasted! I could not have the heart to explain everything in front of the two gentlemen enjoying their delicacy of two plates full of escargots, so I said I will explain why during coffee.
During coffe, I told my father not to ever offer me escargot again, as I have pledged that I will never eat the same species of my "best friend" from my 2nd grade days.
"You don't know what you have missed for your silly pledge!" exclaimed the French fellow! "I know, but there is something you've got to stick to no matter what!" If I had been raised on a farm, I'm sure I would have turned out to be a vegetarian!
