今週は怒涛のような忙しさで、日記を書く時間が取れなかった。今寝ると4時間寝れるけど日記を書くと3時間になる、さぁ、日記を書くか眠るか、という選択になると、疲れているし明日の授業もあるから、早く寝なきゃということになって、日記が後回しになってしまった。でも、こういうときこそ、毎日書きたいことが山ほど沸いて来るんだよな。
火曜日はまた学部生の採点の件でOffice Hourを設ける。最初は自分の成績に納得いかないと不満顔で来る学生も、ちゃんと説明したら納得顔で帰っていく。良かった。
それから6時に迫ったAsian Cultural Nightのプレゼンの最終仕上げに入る。15分という短い時間で日本の伝統的、そして今のカルチャーを様々な側面から伝えるにはどうしたらいいか考える。と、そのとき一通のメールが届いた。それはスペイン人クラスメートからで、中国人クラスメートがビジネススクールの多くの学生（日本人は除く）に送ったと思われるメールが転送されていて、そこにはこう書いてあった。

felt like that it is my obligation to forward out.
ワードのファイルが添付されていたので開いてみたら、びっくりした。以下、転送する。中国語はわからないけれど、英語の訳と漢字から判断すると、日本にひどいことをされた過去を忘れるな。日本を叩き潰せ、みたいな感じらしい。そして、その後は、日本軍に殺された中国人の死体や切り取られた頭、レイプされた女性など、残虐で吐き気をもよおすような写真が延々と続いていた。
ショックだった。このメールを送った彼女は一緒に旅行に行ったりもして、結構仲がいいと思っていただけに、いっそうショックだった。私を含めて日本人クラスメートには黙って、こういうメールをビジネススクールのクラスメート達に送っている彼女の真意は何なのか？同じ過ちを繰り返さないためにも、過去を忘れてはいけない、というのが真意ならば、いちばん忘れてほしくない日本人にまず送るべきではないのか。彼女の行為は、私には、単に反日感情を高めるための卑劣な嫌がらせとしか思えない。彼女はかつて私に向かって「私は日本が大嫌いなので日本には絶対に行かない」と言い放った。アメリカのビジネススクールで教育を受け、卒業後も多国籍企業で働く彼女なのに、この日本に対する憎悪はいったい何なのか？
中国、韓国、日本が合同で開催するAsian Cultural Nightの開催3時間前にこういうメールを受け取り、怒りとやるせなさと悲しさで震えが止まらなかった。中国と日本がお互い憎み合っても、そこからは何も生まれない。今夜のAsian Cultural Nightは何としてでも成功させたいと思った。中国と韓国と日本がお互いに協力してイベントを開催し、お互いの文化を理解する。一人一人、個人レベルで、中国人、韓国人、日本人が理解し合い、仲良くなる。そうすれば、政府やマスコミ、教育が反日感情、反中感情をあおりたてようとしても、「でも、私は素晴らしい日本人を知っている」「でも、私はとても信頼できる中国人を知っている」と言うことができ、政府の反日プロパガンダを鵜呑みにしない。草の根的だけど、このような中国人、日本人を増やしていくことが、両国の友好関係に非常に重要なのではないかと思う。
私1人の力で反日運動を抑えることはできないけれど、せめてこちらで知り合う中国人の1人でも多くに「日本人だっていい奴はいるよ」と言ってもらえるようにしたいと思っている。そして、積極的に中国人と交流を持つようにして、彼らが日本に対して何を思っているのか、オープンに話し合うようにしている。この件に関しては、かなり長くなるので、また別のコラムで書きたい。
