The academic landscape has been shaped by rich benefactors such as Ezra Cornell,Cornelius Vanderbilt,John Hopkins and John D. Rockefeller. And the tradition of philanthropy survives to this day : in fiscal 2004, private donors gave $24.4 billion to universities.
大学の資金源は政府や宗教団体、授業料、慈善家の寄付。
寄付金の額が半端じゃない。
2004年度の個人の寄付金総額は$24.4 billion だというからびっくりです！！

エコノミストのサイトに行ってみましたが、記事はほとんど有料になっているのですね。
