On New Year’s Day,
I headed to work as usual.
I’ve been doing this job for a long time,
long enough to be used to working on January 1st.
Used to is a convenient phrase,
but it’s probably a little closer to resignation.
Because it was a public holiday,
the business hours were shorter,
and the shop wasn’t as busy as I’d expected.
I bought a coffee along the way,
drank it slowly,
On the way home,
I bought some sweet red bean paste
and ate it with rice cakes.
This kind of New Year’s Day,
I thought, isn’t so bad.
