On New Year’s Day,I headed to work as usual.I’ve been doing this job for a long time,long enough to be used to working on January 1st.Used to is a convenient phrase,but it’s probably a little closer to resignation.Because it was a public holiday,the business hours were shorter,and the shop wasn’t as busy as I’d expected.I bought a coffee along the way,drank it slowly,and finished my shift without much fuss.On the way home,I bought some sweet red bean pasteand ate it with rice cakes.This kind of New Year’s Day,I thought, isn’t so bad.The red bean paste was,properly delicious.
