What Happened

The Fed is one vote away from its first hike since 2023. August CPI landed Friday morning and the headline number did what everyone expected, 3.4% annual, up 0.4% on the month, mostly gasoline. The figure that moved the market was core, which rose 0.3% against a 0.2% forecast and accelerated from July. Annual core actually held at 2.4%, which is the lowest reading in years, so a lot of desks could have written “inflation cools” on Friday and been accurate. Nobody did.

CME FedWatch odds of a 25 basis point hike on September 16 went from 70% on Thursday to roughly 90% after the print, and EY-Parthenon moved its call to a quarter point, taking the target range to 3.75–4.00%. Polymarket is sitting lower at 80%. Warsh has spent his entire chairmanship saying he would not hesitate, and the July meeting already produced three dissents in favor of hiking, so, the committee arithmetic was there before the data arrived.

The CLARITY Act gets its cloture vote on Tuesday at 2:15 p.m. ET. Senate Republicans released revised text on September 10 that requires non-decentralized DeFi protocols to register with the CFTC, narrows the DeFi provisions to spot and cash digital commodity transactions, and clarifies credit union authority. The ethics section, which is the actual sticking point, was not touched. Cloture needs 60. Republicans hold 53, and with expected defections the realistic ask is somewhere between seven and ten Democrats.

Polymarket has the bill being signed into law this year at 24%, having spiked briefly to 28% on Friday, down from 82% in February. Galaxy Research is in the low double digits.

Brian Armstrong told CNBC on Thursday that he has spoken with senators and believes the bill is ready for a yes, and that if it fails the SEC and CFTC will publish rulemaking within a month regardless. White House crypto adviser Patrick Witt has been making the same case publicly, arguing that senators with unresolved concerns should vote to proceed and fix them by amendment.

The bond market did most of the damage. The 10-year closed Friday at 4.96% after spiking 11 basis points on Thursday to its highest level since October 2023, and the 30-year finished at 5.36%, above the 5.30% area that BMO has described as Bessent’s informal line in the sand. Wednesday’s Treasury buyback came in at $5.187bn against an announced maximum of $6bn, which traders read as a signal that the yield curve control experiment has limits. Michigan sentiment missed at 47.8 with one-year inflation expectations at 4.6%.

Oil is the reason inflation is running. Iran said it attacked ten ships in the Strait of Hormuz after US forces sank five IRGC-linked tankers, Houthi forces seized the port of Mocha near Bab al-Mandab, and Brent traded as high as $108 on Thursday before settling around $104. WTI finished near $100, up roughly 9% on the week. Gulf foreign ministers meet their Iranian counterpart in Oman on Monday to discuss a temporary shipping arrangement. Four vessels transited the strait on Saturday and six on Sunday, against more than 20% of global energy supply before the war. HSBC put Brent at $120 if flows stay at current levels.

Spot bitcoin ETFs had their first week of 2026 without a single positive day. Net outflows totalled $462.73m across the four sessions from September 8 to 11, with the worst day on Thursday at $282.7m, driven mainly by ARKB and GBTC. That came immediately after the strongest three-week inflow run of the year, $3.8bn between mid-August and September 5, including a $731m single day on September 3 that was the biggest since January. Ether funds went the other way and closed the week with $216.41m on Friday alone, most of it through BlackRock’s ETHA.

Roughly 4,000 BTC walked out of the Liquid Network. On September 6, about $320m in bitcoin left Blockstream’s federation wallet through what looked like an ordinary peg-out, taking reserves from 4,200 BTC down to around 197. No keys were stolen. A range-proof verification cache bug in Elements, the Bitcoin Core fork Liquid runs on, allowed L-BTC to be created without matching bitcoin behind it, and the 11-of-15 federation then honoured the redemption because the request was technically valid. Actors describing themselves as white hats returned 3,400 BTC after a patch shipped and kept about 598 BTC, worth $47m, as a self-declared bounty. Block production restarted Thursday. Peg operations are still paused and Blockstream has refused to pay.

Gold fell for a third straight week, closing down 1.84% at $4,348.60 after printing the week’s high on Tuesday and losing about $90 in a session on hawkish comments from Governor Barr. Bullion is up 0.7% on the year and sits roughly 20% below its January record.

Bitcoin ended the week around $77,100, down roughly 3.5%. Ether held near $2,520, Solana around $101, XRP at $1.36, BNB at $733. The S&P fell 0.8% to 7,656.98 after snapping a four-day losing streak on Friday. Bitcoin dominance sits at 59.25%. The Fear and Greed index cooled to 56 from 74 a week earlier.
