Do you remember HOOK on the Japanese Famicom? 🏴‍☠️

Released in Japan in 1991, HOOK is a Famicom action game based on the world of the movie HOOK .

Peter Pan, Tinker Bell, Neverland and Captain Hook…

Those familiar characters become an 8-bit Japanese Famicom adventure .

And this time, I actually played it.

Unfortunately…

Captain Hook got me. GAME OVER! 😅

HOOK

to the Japanese Famicom

The game is based on the 1991 movie HOOK , directed by Steven Spielberg.

The movie tells the story of Peter Banning, a grown-up Peter Pan who returns to Neverland after Captain Hook kidnaps his children.

For fans of the movie, seeing this world transformed into an 8-bit Famicom game is pretty interesting.

Instead of watching Peter Pan’s adventure on the screen, you can actually control him yourself .

🎮 What is the Japanese Famicom version like?

The Japanese Famicom version is a side-scrolling action game.

The cartridge itself has a distinctive design, and the game captures the fantasy adventure atmosphere of HOOK using the limited hardware of the Famicom.

What I wanted to show with JP RETRO GAMES isn’t just the cartridge.

I wanted to show what it actually feels like to play the game today .

That’s why my video uses real Japanese Famicom gameplay and game audio.

🕹️ The actual gameplay

The adventure begins in classic Famicom style.

JP RETRO GAMES No.01 — HOOK

The opening immediately gives you that early-1990s Famicom feeling.

Then the game moves into its adventure stage

The gameplay is a classic action-game experience, with Peter Pan moving through the stages and fighting enemies.

🧚 And then… Captain Hook appears

This is my favorite part of the recording.

Near the end of my play session, Tinker Bell appears…

And then Captain Hook starts closing in.

This is where things get serious.

I wasn’t able to escape.

And eventually…

GAME OVER.

Sometimes the game wins. 😅

That’s one of the things I like about playing these old games.

You’re not just looking at retro graphics.

You’re actually playing them.

Some are based on famous movies, manga or anime.

Others are completely original games.

Through JP RETRO GAMES , I want to introduce these physical Japanese games to retro gaming fans around the world.

Not just the box or cartridge.

The game itself.

How does it look?

How does it sound?

And most importantly—

Is it fun to play?

That’s what I want to explore with this series.
