いただきます Let's eat. 頂きます When the Japanese sit down to eat, whether it be a meal or some cakes, they say Itadakimasu before taking up chopsticks or the plate of cakes. This expression is generally used to express thanks to food, and may be regarded as somewhat similar to the grace Christians say at their meals. Children have been taught to thank Kami (god) and parents for their food.
