Valentine's: Sweetest holiday
Stephen Taylor / Daily Yomiuri Staff Writer

According to one version of history, it was a Kobe-based chocolate manufacturer in the 1930s that introduced the notion of women giving chocolates to men on Feb. 14. Since then, Japan has embraced St. Valentine's Day with such fervor that it concocted a "White Day" on March 14 for men to reciprocate for the sweets they received.

As anyone with a sweet tooth will likely have a penchant for cold treats, too, it was inevitable that ice cream companies would get in on the act.

This year, two international ice cream retailers--Cold Stone Creamery and Haagen-Dazs--will be offering Valentine's treats on their respective menus over the next couple of weeks.

For this season of romance, the Arizona-based Cold Stone Creamery has created two dishes: the Valentine-themed "Hug Me Choco-Berry" and the White Day-themed "White Tinker Love."

As the name suggests, "Hug Me Choco-Berry" has a chocolate ice cream base, with strawberry mousse, whipped cream and strawberry sauce, while "White Tinker Love" features white chocolate ice cream, strawberry chiffon cake and raspberry and strawberry flavors.

Both are available in either a paper tub or a waffle shell, which itself may be dipped in chocolate.

At Cold Stone Creamery's branch in Shinjuku's Lumine Est--the chain's most popular outlet during the Valentine's period, according to the company--the 960 yen price tag for the pair of "Like It" portions is not only rewarded with a couple of ice creams, but also a song from the counter assistants. Staff are encouraged to sing simple ditties, such as "Jingle Bells" at Christmastime, as part of their customer service. And if the idea of a singing ice cream server might be a bit too gooey for some people, they do ask before they burst into song.

The special creations--which have apparently been selling well since their launch earlier this month--will be available until March 14, with the company hopeful that their dishes will spread a little happiness.

"We hope that each customer enjoys the season of love with our creations," a Cold Stone Creamery spokesman said.

At Haagen-Dazs' outlets across Japan, the "Chocolate For You" dish (480 yen) will be on sale until White Day. Based on a scoop of chocolate ice cream with a hint of raspberry, this was a more straightforward offering than its Cold Stone Creamery counterpart, though the chocolate taste was more pronounced. The addition of custard cream, almond chocolate and nuts flavored with green tea and mascarpone added a bit of color to the dish, and provided a nice contrast of flavors.

However, Chocolate For You is served in a rather prosaic plastic dish, slightly diminishing the romantic feel of the experience.

While the Valentine's ice cream at Cold Stone Creamery and Haagen-Dazs include berries in their respective recipes, restaurants in Tokyo's Ebisu Garden Place will be offering even more berries from Feb. 1-14, as part of the shopping area's "Very! Berry! Valentine" campaign.

Cafe-cum-bar Papa's Cafe will be serving a strawberry roll cake. This Swiss roll dessert, filled with cream and strawberries, will sell for 700 yen.

Buco di Muro will offer an Italian twist for their Valentine's delight, with the "Raw Chocolate and Berry Zuppa Inglese," a sponge cake with custard cream.

The Ebisu Wine Cafe will be selling its "Mousse Fromage Berry with Red Wine Aroma" for 600 yen. Whether the pairing of cheese-flavored mousse with strawberry sauce and a hint of wine goes well with a glass of red is open to question, but no doubt there will be plenty of willing takers as we approach St. Valentine's Day.
