老化の有力な原因の一つとされてきた「活性酸素」が、実は老化に関与していなかったとの研究結果を、東大食品工学研究室の染谷慎一（そめや・しんいち）特任教員らと米ウィスコンシン大、フロリダ大のチームがまとめた。チームはさらに、細胞内小器官「ミトコンドリア」にあるＤＮＡの損傷蓄積が老化の一因となるメカニズムを解明。１５日付の米科学誌サイエンスに発表した。
活性酸素は、体を酸化させ、遺伝子や細胞膜を傷付ける有害物質とされる。従来、活性酸素がミトコンドリアを攻撃して老化を促すと考えられていた。その働きを抑える抗酸化効果をうたった健康補助食品などが市場をにぎわせている。
染谷特任教員は「マウスを使った実験で、活性酸素がミトコンドリアに障害を与えているとの見方が否定された。新たなメカニズム解明は、老化の抑制方法開発につながる」と話している。
