BBC が、7月15日金曜日中国の Zhu Chenghu 大将が、「もし台湾を巡る紛争で、米国がミサイルを使用したり、中国向けに position-guided 兵器を中国領へ打ち込んだりしたら、中国は米国に対して核兵器を持って応戦する。」と外国記者との会見で述べたことを伝えています。そして中国外務省は、この発言の影響力を何とか打ち消そうといます。

China plays down nuclear 'threat'
The Chinese government has downplayed remarks by a senior general suggesting that China might use nuclear weapons if the US attacked it over Taiwan.

Major General Zhu Chenghu was only expressing "personal views", Beijing officials said.

A foreign ministry spokesman said Beijing was committed to its policy of peaceful re-unification with Taiwan.

中国の弾道ミサイルは、ある情報によれば、米国に届くもの80発ほど配備されているとのことです。北朝鮮などもそうですが、もてる国（北朝鮮は、はっきりしていませんが・・・）軍部はどうしてもこの手の恫喝はしてみたくなる、この傾向が強いです。

米国政府は冷静

米国国務省の Sean McCormack 広報官は、中国 Zhu Chenghu 大将の核兵器による応戦論を無責任な個人的見解と非難をしながらも、これが中国政府の公式見解でないことを希望すると記者会見で述べたとのこと。

WASHINGTON, July 15 - A Chinese general who said his country would use nuclear weapons against the United States if the American military intervened in any conflict with Taiwan drew a sharp rebuke from the Bush administration on Friday.

Sean McCormack, the State Department spokesman, called the remarks "highly irresponsible" - unusually strong language for Mr. McCormack, who was in Beijing with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice just four days ago. He added, "We hope that these are not the views of the Chinese government."

もともと中国は、核兵器による先攻はしないといっている国ですが、台湾問題に関しては、台湾の分離独立派に対する相当の苛立ちが中国側にあることは確かです。
