indianexpress.com によれば、潘基文国連事務総長は、イラクフセイン政権時代の幹部の絞首刑には、反対の意思表示を示している由。
国連の死刑反対基本方針に沿った要請と言うことになりますが、既に死刑執行されたフセイン元大統領の時のコメントととニュアンスの異なる要請となった今回は、仕事始めの不慣れの表明とはことなり、国連の人道問題関連幹部に足並みを揃え、死刑反対を改めて表明した形となりました。
しかし、イラクの特別法廷の公正さや正当性に関しては潘事務総長一切触れず、死刑反対のみの表明となっています。
IndianExpress.com昨年、フセイン元大統領の死刑のほか、２名のフセイン政権時代の幹部が死刑を宣告されており、近いうちに絞首刑に処せられると見られています。これに対して潘基文国連事務総長は、イラク大統領に死刑を執行せぬよう要請したとか。

Ban, who was sharply criticised by rights organisations for not coming out as strongly as his predecessor Kofi Annan against the death penalty, sought to explain his remarks and soften his stand on the issue. UN Chief Spokesperson Michele Montas said Ban believes the UN should move towards abolition of the death penalty but member states have their own views.
