SEOUL : US envoy Christopher Hill stressed on Thursday that North Korea must surrender all its nuclear stockpiles in return for lasting peace, as US experts arrived in the communist state to start disabling its atomic plants.
Disabling "is just part of the game," Assistant Secretary of State Hill told reporters on arrival in South Korea from Beijing.
"What we want to do is move beyond disabling to dismantling, and then to the abandoning of all the separated plutonium."
Under a February six-nation pact the North has pledged to disable by year-end the atomic programme it has been developing for half a century.
Negotiators say the toughest bargaining will come next year, when the North is supposed to dismantle the plants and give up its plutonium and weapons in return for normalised relations with Washington and a permanent peace pact.
