外国の博物館でミイラを見た経験があるが、気持ちが悪いというのが正直な気持ちだった。最近人間の身体を展示することに議論が起こっている。博物館によっては呼び方がミイラからミイラ化した人間と変ったことがこうした議論のきっかけとなったようだ。この呼び方の変化が意味するのはミイラは人間か物かという問題である。多くの宗教で身体は入れ物で、死ぬと魂は離れてゆくと考えている。火葬するのも遺体はもはや人間でなくなっているという考えからきているのだと思われる。しかし宗教や慣習によって遺体の扱いは異なっている。
この問題には別の側面があって、英国やアメリカの博物館にあるミイラはほとんどが黒人、褐色人種、土着民で植民地から持ち込んだものが多いという。このためミイラの展示は人種差別であるという批判がある。
博物館での呼び方を変えるだけではこの問題は解決しないと思われる。子孫や部族に返して葬ってあげるべきだという意見があるが、英国の博物館ではミイラは呼び物の一つになっており、すぐには応じにくいようだ。
I have seen mummies in the museum when I visited foreign countries. I remember I didn't feel comfortable. Now it is a contentious issue to display human body in museums. Some museums changed the term from mummy to mummified person when they talk about it. They seem to be wondering whether mummy is object or human. In many religions including Buddhism a body is thought as a vessel for the soul. Maybe that is why we cremate it. However, the way people treat dead body varies depending on their customs and religions.
Another problem of putting mummy on display is that most of them in Western museums are black, brown, and indigenous people. It is the legacy of the colonialism. Some criticize it as racism. They should be returned to their descendants to rest in their homelands. But in British museum mummy is an important element for visitors.
