The presentation was entitled “Can stop the crisis of Darfur”, took about one and a half hour. I got really shocked by the presentation with screen projector and power point.

Presentation of crisis of Darfur1

Sudan is a country which has the largest country area in Africa. And the border of the country, drawn with strait lines, shows us that the country was established by intension of foreign countries, ignoring its races, religions, cultures and customs.

Sudan, in which more than 100 different races live, has political conflict caused by policy of its military government, poverty and starvation. It is said that the civil war of Sudan is of the longest period of time in the world and history, actually, it’s been 23 years since 1983. 400,000 people have been killed in the war, and 2400,000 people are still forced to be displaced today. From 10,000 to 15,000 people are killed by the war par month. It is the fact, which does exist in Sudan.

It is said that the prosperity of limited number of people of Arabic causes a part of the civil war. Arabic people are in most of political power. And the government commits taking action of exclusion of people of Darfur area of west Sudan. It is different from other countries, in Sudan, “Black people” means “Poor people”. Even if someone is black colored, when the person is rich, the person is allowed to call oneself “Arabic”. It reminds me the fact that we Japanese are enjoying to be called “honorary members of White people” in some African countries such as South Africa.

I got shocked to know that there is a group of terrorists sponsored by the government. Thousands of cities and towns have been destroyed, and lifelines such as water system, loads and other systems have been critically destroyed, and millions people are forced to expose themselves to the danger of terrorism of this kind. The terrorists attack cities by an aerial bombing with helicopters. It is the obvious evidence of the fact that the terrorists are sponsored by the government, the presenter said.
After the aerial bombing, a terrorists group, called “janjaweed”, means “devils on horses”, attack the city with guns. They commit robbing, rape, killing people.

The difficulty in understanding of political conflict prevent United Nations, NATO, and even The United Stats that is very proud of itself as the police of the world, to take actions like sending peace-keeping troops. And China, a member of the United Nations Security Council, wants vested interests of Sudan, the government, to continue dominating the coutry. An action trying to annihilate certain race of human is called “genocide”. United Nations can take action of peace-keeping according to the definition of genocide. However, in Sudan, the relationship among human races, of which taking actions of killing people and the victims, is very complicated. This fact makes it very difficult for United Nations to take actions of peace-keeping like sending troops. I got really shocked to know the word of “auto-genocide”. It means that there are some people who are willing to kill people of the race to which the ones belong. The political conflicts between the military government and anti-government groups, caused by the unbalance of possession, raise opposition of the two and the civil war. And between them, people called IDP (Internal displaced population) are forced to live as refugee, without hope to ask other countries to help them. Living in refugee camp doesn't mean that they can live totally safe. When they get outside of the refugee camp, they get exposed to the risk of, for women, being raped, for men, being killed after castration, for children, being adopted and abused as sexual slaves. I felt so sorry at the picture of a man killed by terrorists. Those children of IDP, 80% of them are of malnutrition of less than 5 years old. And 70% of the victims, number of 10,000 to 15,000, who are killed in the civil war, are also children less than 5 years old.

There are numerous people of victims, maybe more than hundreds or thousands times as much as the limited number of people who are enjoying truely unfair vested interest with unfair political power. Too many people have been killed, and still now there are numerous people exposed to the risk of lives, and, if we don’t take any actions, the number of people who are killed by civil war will continue increasing.

No need to say, it is more important to focus on the fact, in Sudan, there are very cruel actions obviously against human rights than the definition of genocide. I got really embarrassed at the fact that I didn’t know the issues of Sudan, didn’t even try to know about civil war and human rights problems of Sudan, I have been living in peace here in Japan.

Presentation of crisis of Darfur2

Can we let it be, because it is the matter of a country which is very long way form here? Can we avoid to get involved in the problem, because it is a story beyond belief? Can we do that kind of things, despite of the fact that we Japanese are enjoying being benefited by the oil which is produced by the country, Sudan? I want to give deep thought to this matter. This is a prblem of the same human beings. And they are taking such cruel actions on the same planet, earth, on which we live.
This is never a problem which occurs somewhere else nor someone else. This is a problem, we human beings should try to get solved. I have to admit that there are so many problems on the earth. And we may think in a way of “Problems are so many! I don’t know..., I can' decide which should we start with?” But, I think that it is alright with us, to start just one thing which we get to know and related, involved in,
with “EN”. “EN” (縁) is a Japanese word which means invisible relationships and fortunes among human beings. I have known about the problem of Sudan with the presentation. I want to start taking action, letting as many people as possible know about the civil war and human rights issues in Sudan. I don’t want to let it go, the sensation of deep sorrow that I had when I listened to the presentation and looked at the picture of the victims of the war. So, first of all, I wrote this article. I have started form here, as one of lots of the actions I can take to the problems in Sudan.
