▼ What is ALPS treated water?
It is water which has been purified until it satisfies safety standards for all radioactive substances other than tritium.
The number of giant tanks where ALPS treated water is stored in the area of the Tokyo Electric Power Company’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station is increasing and already exceeds a thousand.
Tritium which cannot be removed by ALPS will be significantly diluted with seawater before discharge in order to fully satisfy safety standards. There is no concern about effects on human health or the environment resulting from the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea.

In order to safely proceed with the full-scale decommissioning work which will begin soon, space is required for construction of essential facilities.
For this reason, it will be necessary to discharge ALPS treated water and reduce the number of tanks that occupy the site.

ALPS treated water will be discharged into the sea
after fully satisfying safety standards.

For preventing reputational damage
The Japanese government will provide information that is based on scientific evidence and has been checked regarding safety by third-party agencies.
