iPad mini 「Amazon整備済み品」購入をめぐる端末～その2　The Story Behind My Purchase of an Amazon Refurbished iPad Mini — Part 2

あらためて、商品の説明ページをよく確認してみると…。

Q：Amazon整備済み品の商品には、どのようなコンディションを期待できますか?
A:商品は工場出荷時の設定に復元され、外観コンディションが「非常に良い」、「良い」、または「可」のいずれかとなります。

とある。わたしがこれまでに楽天などのショップで購入した中古スマホは、大抵「新品同様」「非常に良い」「良い」「可」「難あり」、もしくは、「S」「A」「B」「C」といった具合に分かれていた。私はもっぱら、その中の「大変良い」または「良い」レベルのものを購入していたが、「良い」もしくは「B」ランクでこんなにひどいものにあたったことはなかった。

もうひとつ下の「可」とか「C」ランクの商品は、通常、一般的な中古ショップでは、状態がよいものより５K程度は安く買えるのが普通だ。
しかし、今回の例を見ると、アマゾン整備済み品では、下のランクのものもひっくるめて同じ価格で売っていて、しかもどようなものが送られてくるかについては、天に運を任せるしかないということらしい。

いやそもそも、あらためて楽天のショップと比べてみると、仮に状態がよい品だったとしても、決してプライス的には安くないということに気づいた。

Cランクなら（＝おそらく今回送られてきたものと同等れべるであれば）もっと安く普通に買える。

さて、Amazon整備済み品の説明に戻って、「可」の品がどんな品質なのかを確認してみると、
＞外見の状態：使用可能な状態です。
＞スクリーン：画面をオンにすると見えなくなるような浅い傷があります。
＞本体：本体には30センチ離して持った際に見える傷あり、触ると傷がわかります。
＞機能面：完全に機能します。
＞バッテリー：元の電池残量が、80％以上残っています。
＞アクセサリー：付属品または代替アクセサリーが同梱され、梱包されています。
ということらしい。

この条件に照らしても、（前のエントリーの写真では判りずらかったかもしれないが）私のところに送られてきたipad miniは、画面オンでも判別できるような傷が複数あったし、そもそも本体下のベゼル部分のキズは30センチ離れたところからでも確認できた。
なので、その日のうちに写真を添付して、ショップに返品希望のメールを送ることにした。
即日行動に移したのは、傷が後からついたのでないかなどと因縁をつけられたくなかったからだ。また、「交換」にしなかったのは、シレっとまた同じような品を送ってきかねないと思ったからだ。

いったんすべてセットアップしてあったのを再度初期化する。面倒な作業だったが、仕方がない。今回送られ来たiPad miniを使用したのは、実質１日だけだった。
ちなみにこの機体、外観のキズだけでなく、ホームボタンもパシャパシャとした金属的な感触で、明らかに私が使用していたものよりも印象が悪かった。バッテリの持ちは確認しなかったが、そのような外観からすれば、きっとそれなりにヘタッていたのではと思われる（整備品基準ギリギリだと80％ということになる）。返品できて本当に良かった。

もう１回続く。

Upon taking a closer look at the product description page, I noticed the following:

Q: What kind of condition can you expect from Amazon Certified Refurbished products?

When I’ve bought used smartphones from Rakuten and other shops in the past, they were usually categorized as “Like New,” “Very Good,” “Good,” “Acceptable,” or “Defective,” or sometimes labeled as “S,” “A,” “B,” or “C.” I typically went for items rated “Very Good” or “Good,” and I’d never encountered anything this bad at the “Good” or “B” level before.

The next lower tier, such as “Acceptable” or “C,” is normally about 5,000 yen cheaper than higher-quality used items at most second-hand shops. However, in this case, it seems that Amazon sells all lower-tier items at the same price, leaving the buyer to hope for the best regarding what actually arrives.

In fact, comparing with Rakuten shops once again, I realized that even if the item were in good condition, the price isn’t particularly cheap.
If it were a C-grade item—roughly equivalent to what I received this time—it could normally be bought much cheaper.

That said, if I were to defend Amazon a little, their Certified Refurbished products come with a 180-day warranty, whereas typical second-hand shops offer only one to three months (usually just one month).

Returning to Amazon’s description for “Acceptable” items, the conditions are listed as follows:
Exterior: Usable condition.
Screen: Shallow scratches that are not visible when the screen is on.
Body: Scratches visible from 30 cm away and noticeable to the touch.
Functionality: Fully functional.
Battery: Original battery retains at least 80% capacity.
Accessories: Original or replacement accessories included and packaged.
Even judging by these standards, my iPad Mini—which may have been hard to see clearly in the photos from the previous post—had multiple scratches visible even when the screen was on. The scratch on the lower bezel was also noticeable from 30 cm away.

So I immediately sent an email to the seller that same day, attaching photos and requesting a return. I acted right away to avoid any disputes over whether the scratches appeared later. I didn’t request a replacement, because I suspected they might just send another similarly flawed unit.
I received a reply two days later. The return was approved without issue (I imagine complaints like this must be fairly common).
I had to reset the iPad, which I had already fully set up—tedious, but unavoidable. In practice, I only used the unit for a single day. Incidentally, this device not only had scratches, but the Home button also had a noticeably metallic, “clicky” feel, making it seem worse than the iPad I had been using. I didn’t check battery life, but judging from the condition, it was probably quite worn (with 80% being the minimum for refurbished standards). I’m really glad I was able to return it.
