ぶらり東京散歩その33～小塚原処刑場跡　Tokyo Stroll 33 Site of Kozukahara Execution Grounds

After visiting Mekake Fudo, I traveled by the Toei Arakawa Line.

通称「さくらトラム」。結構混むなぁと思ったら、多くの客が「荒川遊園地前」で降りていった。
Also known as the “Sakura Tram.” it was quite crowded, and then I found many passengers getting off at “Arakawa Yūenchi-mae.”

終点の「三ノ輪橋」。降りるのは初めて。
The final stop is “Minowabashi.” It was my first time getting off there.

駅前にはこんなショップもある。
There’s also a shop like this right in front of the station.

そこから南千住仲通り商店街をつらつらと歩く。

ひなびた感じの商店街というと響きは良いが、正直寂れた印象を拭えない。
Calling it a quaint shopping street sounds nice, but honestly, it can’t shake off a somewhat rundown impression.

しばらく歩いて目的の「小塚原回向院」に到着。
After walking for a while, I arrived at my destination, Kozukahara Ekō-in Temple.

江戸の二大処刑場のひとつ、「小塚原処刑場」があったところだ。
This is the site of Kozukahara Execution Grounds, one of Edo’s two major execution sites.

お寺の奥は通常の墓地と史跡エリアとに分かれている。
At the back of the temple, the area is divided into a regular cemetery and a historic site section.

一番奥にあるのが、吉田松蔭の墓。写真に写っていないが、右隣に橋下左内の墓がある。
At the very back is the grave of Yoshida Shōin,Famous activists from the end of the Edo period. Although it’s not visible in the photo, the grave of Hashimoto Sanai is located just to the right of it.

ここはまた、杉田玄白らが日本で初めて「腑分け」をした地でもある。記念のレリーフが飾られている。

延命寺は昭和57年に小塚原刑場の傍らに開かれた小塚原回向院から分院独立し開山した浄土宗の寺で、境内には首切り地蔵と呼ばれる地蔵尊が祀られている。
Enmei-ji Temple is a Jodo sect temple that was established in 1982 as an independent branch separated from Kozukahara Ekō-in, which is located adjacent to the Kozukahara Execution Grounds. On its grounds is enshrined a Jizo statue known as the “Kubikiri Jizo” (Neck-Cutting Jizo).

鈴ヶ森処刑場ともども江戸時代の史跡ではあるが、どちらも20万人とも伝えられる多くの人々が処刑された地だ。物見遊山や心霊スポットめぐりのような気分で訪れるようなところではないし、そういう雰囲気でもない。
Both Suzugamori and Kozukahara Execution Grounds are historical sites from the Edo period, and each is said to be the place where as many as 200,000 people were executed. These are not places to visit casually for sightseeing or ghost tours, nor do they have that kind of atmosphere.
