Very few Japanese are tattooed. We associate tattoo with yakuza, member of organized crime. But we see many foreigners with tattoo on their hands and presumably also other parts of body. According to a survey four out of ten Americans aged 18 to 19 have tattoo, and 40 % of those aged 40 to 54 also have one or more. The concern about health problems of tattoo is growing in the US.
Most pigments used for tattoo trigger allergy. Yellow and red are typical. They causes swelling, redness and itch, and for some people blisters, scaly patches and other serious skin problems (including skin cancer). In more serious cases pigments such as carbon black and titanium oxide(white) were found in lymph node. Heavy metals that were added to pigment as preservatives were found in lymph node. After-care is very important. A man went swimming in the sea five days after getting tattoo. He was infected with bacteria and died within a month.
We should be aware of those health problems before deciding to get tattoo.
