中国は今回の冬季オリンピックを環境にやさしい大会にすると約束している。生物保護、温室効果ガス放出削減、資源保存を掲げている。しかし実際には人工の雪を使い、環境保護地域に会場を設定している。この会場を作るために2万本の木を他の場所に移し、そのために大量の表面土を移設しているが、これは地滑りや水の汚染、生態系の破壊を生ずる恐れがあるという。また、人工雪の製造には大量の水とエネルギーが必要である。
しかし過去の大会でも人工雪が使われており、1924年のシャモニ以来これまでに開かれた20の冬季オリンピック会場のうちで、2050年までに人工雪で開催できるのは10会場だけだという。オリンピックの開催も環境にやさしいことが条件となっているようだ。昨年の東京オリンピックはコロナ感染防止が一番の関心事だった印象があるが、環境への配慮も重要な条件だったのだろうか。

But critics say it uses artificial snow and some games are held in the area of nature reserve. To construct those sites more than 20,000 trees were transplanted and the topsoil was moved to other locations. Specialists say it increases the risk of landslides, water pollution and damages to wildlife. The production of artificial snow requires large amount of water and energy.
Artificial snow was used also in the previous Olympics. Scientists think that among 20 venues used for winter Olympics since 1925 only 10 will have natural snow to host winter Olympic by 2050.
In Tokyo Summer Olympic 2020 we were very concerned about COVID infection. But I did not hear much about the environment protection for the construction of the sites and operation of the games.
