A research showed that seven hours is the optimum amount of sleep for the middle- and old-aged, and longer or shorter than seven hour sleep is associated with a reduced ability to pay attention and remember, solve problems and make decisions. Seven hour sleep is also good for mental health. If people sleep for longer or shorter than seven hours, they may suffer anxiety and depression. Old people who have difficulty falling asleep and who experience frequent awakenings are at risk for developing dementia or dying early. Too little sleep is associated with the buildup of amyloid that could causes dementia, and long sleep could be due to poor quality, fragmented sleep. Other study showed a link between too little and too much sleep and cognitive problems are not cause and effect. Long and short sleep could be the indication of having mental problems. It was also indicated that there is individual variation in the duration and quality of sleep. Ideal amount of sleep varies among people and as we age. It may be suggested from these studies that the optimum amount of sleep is seven hours in average, but each of us should find his or her best conditions including duration and quality.
