Everybody is aware that drinking too much alcohol is bad for health. In the meantime, we have heard that moderate amount of alcohol is good for certain diseases. However, the recent research by Canadian researchers suggests that the less we drink, the better it is for our health. Canadian authorities had previously said that 10 drinks per week is low risk. But citing this recent research 2 drinks per week is now recommended. One drink contains 14g of alcohol which is roughly equivalent to that in 90 ml of Japanese sake. One go(Japanese unit of sake) is 180 ml. So, two drinks is about one go of sake. I think this is too little for most of Japanese sake drinkers.
I learned for the first time that alcohol drinking could be the cause of cancer and impact mental disease. Other studies estimate that a drink of alcohol is as harmful as one to two cigarettes. The risk of breast cancer increases by eight to ten percent with each additional drink. Our understanding of moderate amount of red wine being beneficial for health seems unsubstantiated.
