日本でもコンビニやレストランで注文や支払いにタッチパネルを操作しなければならない所が増えている。私は今のところあまり不便には感じていない。ところがアメリカではパッチパネルが日本より行き渡っているが、これにチップの支払いが含まれているのに不都合を感じる人が多いようだ。パネルには支払うチップの値がパーセンテージで選択するようになっていて、0％もあるが従業員が見ているのでつい数％かをタッチすると、思ったより大きな値になっていることが多いという。出来合いのサンドイッチやコーヒーなどのセルフサービスのレストランなど、これまではチップを払ってなかったところでもタッチパネルではチップの選択が要求されるので、0や少額では後ろめたく感じて支払うことになってしまうという。低所得者でも他の人に合わせたパーセンテージを選ぶので、より負担になるようだ。タッチパネルは人との接触が少なくて済むのでコロナ流行の間にアメリカ社会に浸透していった。また、タッチパネルのほうがチップ収入が多いことも導入を促進したようだ。
アメリカでは知られているようにサービス業の従業員の収入はチップに依存しているが、タッチパネルで増えたチップ収入は必ずしも従業員に渡されていないという。従業員の収入が安定しないと、こうしたタッチパネルによるチップの問題も解決しないようだ.
Touch screens for payment are increasing at convenience stores and restaurants. This new system is not too much trouble to me. But the situation is a bit different in the US. You have to choose how much you chip from a range presented on the screen, for instance 0 to 20 %. When the server watches, you feel pressured to choose higher value. Traditionally people did not chip at self-service shops like coffee and sandwich stands where they did not interact with a shop staff. But in the case of touch screen they feel guilty for not tipping. Touch screen system became popular during covid-19 pandemic. And the increase in tip revenue also encouraged the introduction of touch screen.
In the US service industry worker's income rely on chipping. But the increase in chip is not necessarily translated into workers' income. This issue of tipping in IT age will not be resolved, unless employees get stable income.
