Starbucks that is buying about 3% of the world's coffee is developing new species resistant to climate change. It tries to find ones that will produce large amount of beans for relatively short time. Coffee leaf rust is a disease for coffee trees that is exacerbated by climate change.
Among three coffee varieties arabica has better taste and smell than robusta and liberica, but the latter two are more resistant to climate change. Starbucks aims to develop varieties that taste like arabica, but are more resistant like robusta and liberica.
