しかしアメリカではほとんどの州で1992年に禁止されたスポーツ賭博が2018年に最高裁で認められ、全米50州のうち38州とワシントンDCで合法になり、6州が検討中だという。スポーツ団体も歓迎しているようで、賭博組織と協力している。人気のフットボールの試合スーパーボールでは成人の23％が賭けるだろうと予測している。スポーツ賭博は州政府にも利益になり、ニューヨーク州が最も多くの収入を得ているという。
これにともない賭博が不法であった時には表に出なかった賭博依存症が問題になっている。合法化されたことの利点として賭博依存症の治療が公に行われるようになったことが挙げられている。日本ではギャンブルに対しては厳しく、依存症や八百長がアメリカより深刻にとらえられている。

On the other hand in Japan many gambling is prohibited. In sports gambling match-fixing is strictly punished.
