アメリカもヨーロッパも社会が分離していると言われている。おおざっぱには、これまでのエリートが支配してきた政治を支持する人々とこれに反対して右翼のポピュリズムに惹かれる層である。オリンピックは短い間だが、国が一つになる良い機会だというアメリカ人教授の記事があった。
我々も目に付くことだが、オリンピックではアメリカはもちろん、ヨーロッパの国の代表にアフリカ系の選手が多い。移民出身と思われるこうした選手もオリンピックの間はその国の人々に応援され愛国心の対象となっている。しかし国内では人種差別があり、ヨーロッパの極右の政党は人種差別的政策や移民反対をかかげている。アメリカでもトランプ前大統領を支持するのは白人至上主義者が多いと言われる。アフリカ系の選手にはトラックやフィールド競技、ボクシング、バスケットボールなどのお金のかからないスポーツが多いのは人種差別の表れだという。アフリカ系の人は生物的にスポーツに有利だとよく言われるが、遺伝学的にはその証拠はないんだという。歴史的に肉体労働が多く、それにより身体が鍛えられたものであり、さらに限られたチャンスを生かす彼らの努力の結果であると言っている。
オリンピックは国の多様性を認めるよい機会であり、また真の愛国心は民族や宗教を超えた愛であると結論している。しかし個人的には、同じ人種の選手が各国の代表として競うのをテレビで見ていると、国の代表が競争するというオリンピックの現在のやり方に疑問を持ってしまう。
It is said that there are deep divides in the Western societies including US and some European countries. Roughly speaking these people are those who support established society and those who oppose it and support right wing populism. An article authored by an American professor points out that Olympic is the good chance to unite people.
We notice that African descent athletes represent many European countries and the US. They are cheered by people of the countries they represent and appear to play an important role to unite the country. But in these countries there is racism. Right-wing parties in Europe advocate racial policies and anti-immigration policies. In the US former president Mr.Trump is supported by white supremacists. The author of the article points out that in black athletes are found mostly in low equipment, affordable sports such as track and field, boxing and basketball, suggesting there is racial segregation in those countries. We think that African people have biological advantages for sports. But he says that it is not true. Historically they have been engaged in physical labor, so they developed their physical strength. And they work hard to make good use of limited opportunity.
The author says that Olympic will unite us and real patriotism is defined not by ethnicity or faith but by love. I agree with him. And yet watching on TV African descent athletes representing different countries, I feel amiss with the way Olympics are currently run where national representatives compete.
