「死んだ女の子」はヒクメットが広島・長崎についで、南太平洋のビキニ環礁で3度目の死の灰を浴びた日本の人民を悼んで作詩したものです。トルコ語の原題は「Kiz Cocugu(少女)」。ヒクメットはこの詩のほか,ビキニ環礁で被災した第五福竜丸の日本の漁師を悼んだ「Japon Balikcisi(日本の漁師)」や「Bulutlar Adam Oldulmesin(雲が人間を殺さないように)」という原水爆に反対する気持ち込めた詩(原水爆に関する3部作)を作って日本の人民に贈ってきました。
