Performance

When it comes to performance, the 2013 Acura ILX Sedanhas some obvious hits and misses, but even the misses are better than some of the competition. The standard engine is a 150-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder. It is paired to a five-speed automatic to casually stroll to 60 mph in 9 seconds. However, with that sluggish time comes remarkable fuel economy, returning 24 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. The Premium trim has an available 2.4-liter good for 201 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. The only transmission available for this option is six-speed manual that will get you to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds. Fuel economy remains satisfactory at 25 mpg combined. The 2013 ILX is also available in a frugal hybrid option; the first of its kind for Acura. It features the same setup as Honda Civic Hybrid. It generates 111 horsepower and 127 pound-feet of torque, thanks to a 1.5-liter four-cylinder, and an electric motor that converts energy created by braking into electricity. It is a little slow, taking 10.4 seconds to reach 60 mph, but fuel economy is superb at 38 mpg combined. Acura ILX is nimble, and it holds its composure on the road, but there will be no mistaking that you are in a sedan and not a sports car. So, if you are looking for overly tweaked steering calibrations or a firmer suspension, you will have to look elsewhere.

Technology

• Audio - The base audio system is surprisingly decent, as it features six speakers, CD player, USB interface, Pandora integration, and audio connectivity. Even the base system can convert SMS text messages to audio. An upgraded surround sound is available with 10 speakers, satellite radio, and digital music storage.
• Navigation - The optional hard drive navigation system features an 8-inch screen, voice guidance, voice recognition, AcuraLink™ Traffic and Weather, and Zagat Survey™reviews.
• Bluetooth - Receive and initiate calls right through your audio system. The central color monitor displays the caller's name and number, and you do not even have to remove your phone from your pocket or purse.

Safety

When tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the 2013 ILX received a five-star rating in roof, front, and side-impact protection. Braking capabilities are better than average, taking a respectable 121 feet to stop from 60 mph. A rearview camera is standard on all trims, which is nice considering this is often an added feature in this segment. A few additional safety features include:
• Emergency interior trunk release
• Tire-pressure monitoring
• Electronic brakeforce distribution
• Stability control
• Child seat anchors
• Traction control
• Turn signal mirrors
• Dusk sensing headlamps
• Rear door safety locks
• Emergency braking assist
• Engine immobilizer

Appearance

This all-new model for 2013 appeals to both classic and contemporary shoppers. It is a bit more compact than the TSX and not overly exaggerated, when it comes to aerodynamics. However, the graceful lines give it a modern and sophisticated look. The standard 16-inch wheels are nice, but the 17-inch ones on the Premium trim are a standout feature.

Comfort

The ILX may look considerably smaller than its TLX sibling, but you would never know it by the cabin. There is more than enough room to stretch your legs in both rows. The front row seats are quite supportive too. Although visually appealing, it is not one of the more luxurious cabins you will find in this segment. Everything is well-constructed, but the materials are not the quality you may expect. The layout is user-friendly, with all buttons, knobs, and infotainment functions easy to control without taking your eyes off the road.

Cargo

Trunk space is average. It offers 12.4 cubic feet, but it should be noted that the opening is a bit narrow. However, the rear seat folds flat for long items. Those opting for the hybrid model get 10 cubic feet, as the battery pack uses a little space.
