The Lotus line of cars has had a long and varied history since its inception. However, what the company is most widely known for is its many entries into the racing circuit. Lotus has had numerous vehicles created for the sole purpose of Formula One racing and has developed a reputation in the circuit. That did not stop the design of other vehicles like the Lotus coupe or sedan. In fact, the company was divided decades ago into several companies with one being geared solely towards racing and another towards consumer vehicles. It would eventually branch off to include an American division which would eventually be purchased by General Motors and then Proton.

Lotus may have built much of its name on the sports car, but the Lotus coupe style became quite common with the company as well. There have been a number of coupe models released from the company. One example of the work was the initial Elite. Released in 1958, this coupe featured only two seats and boasted more fiberglass than even the Corvette. The Elite was available to customers until its discontinuation in 1963, However, during that time there were other coupes on the market. Of course there would also be more to come as this style of vehicle continued its rise in popularity.

Fiberglass construction did not stop when the Elite was discontinued. In fact, the Europa was another Lotus coupe that made use of fiberglass in its build. Introduced to the market in 1966 the Europa was crafted with the same philosophy that founder Colin Chapman had held throughout his time with the company. His goal was to keep it simple and light at all times and that is exactly what the Europa did.

The Lotus coupe has not lost its oomph among vehicle lovers and this is present in the modern day Lotus Exige. The vehicle is a small coupe style version of the popular roadster Elise. The Exige began its run for the company in 2000. It was 2004 when a series 2 version of the coupe was released and that would not be the last of the changes. It hit the American market in 2006 with its debut as an S model with a turbocharged engine. The Exige S was redesigned for 2012 and made its debut in 2011.

Though Formula One racing is in the bloodline of the Lotus name, the street car has become just as appealing to customers. With a wide spectrum of choices from the Lotus Coupe to the Lotus Sedan, there is a choice for nearly every particular taste and preference. Throughout the time that Lotus has been producing cars, the coupe style is undoubtedly one that has received the most recognition. It is second only to the sports car in production and availability from the company. Some have been turned to convertibles and others boast a hatchback variant. Lotus continues to be a well-known and well-loved brand of vehicle whether the driver is on a track or a highway.
